50 and back on Bass.

New member. Hello!

When I got out of the Marines in the early 90's I went back to my home town to hang out with my buddies. I showed up with a guitar that I had been learning for a few years. They were like, "Oh no, you can't play guitar, we all play guitar. We need a bass player." So, that is was I did. I had a good teacher at the time who helped me to understand keys, how scales work, relative minors, circles of 5ths, etc. We would play 8 hours a day in my friends basement. Good times.

Ended up playing with some pretty talented people when I went to school at Full Sail in Florida. From there I kind of bounced around Chicago and ended up hitting a dead end with drugs and alcohol. My own issues, and issues that the people surrounding me had. It was a boat afloat but with holes all in the bow. Off topic, but I have been alcohol free for since the age of 27, and don't miss it a drop.

Many years since have I played at home on electric guitar, synths, and occasionally a bass. I recently had a daughter, my first, and it struck me that it would be a sad thing if I never record the songs that I've been lucky to wright over the years. That started me down a new mission to get back on my game and have a basic level of solid gear that I can record my songs with.

With Bass, I'm out of the loop. I'm in awe and humbled by the level of talent on this forum. You guys are awesome! I took my best uninformed shot at getting a little home practice rig that I could also record with. I got a blue, 2021 Charvel San Dimas 4 string PJ for $650 on reverb, supposedly mint. It will show up next week. Also got a Paul Jones Bass Double 4+. I have been able to play that a little bit this last weekend on a borrowed Ibanez. However, I am looking forward to hearing it with the Charvel. I don't know if I did okay with the PJB, but I liked the small foot print as my studio room is not huge.

My intention here on the forum is to learn. There is a lot for me to learn about music production, and being a much better bass player. I appreciate having a solid forum community to learn from. So, cheers to you all, and thanks!

50 is the new 30
I definitely do not feel 3o, my friend! Ha.

I am a strong 50, though. I workout 10 to 30 minutes everyday.

Day 1.Push ups/ triceps.
2. Shoulders.
3. Pull ups.
4. Back and biceps.
5. Squats and sit ups.
And you try to fit a run day in there somewhere, and then you start back at #1, and you keep it going.

5 sets of 7 to 9 reps of each group. Of what ever weight you can feel good about doing.
In the beginning, of course, one should error on starting with a lighter weight and then building up over time.
In a years time you'll know exactly how much weight you should be using for each.
I use 50 pound dumbbells for all of them, but 20's are a great start.

I'd like to try to incorporate that type of discipline into my bass and guitar playing. Even if I don't have time, I'm trying to play guitar/bass 10 minutes before I leave for work in the morning, and 10 before I go to bed at night. Often the 10 at night is so enjoyable that it goes longer, But I at least want to get the 10 in.
Time to go play!

70 is the new 50...

I sort of work out, but it's more like physical therapy than working out. Broken bones, impingments, heavy industry & construction site wear and tear. Lots of stretching, resistence tubes, I can still do a few pull ups, but I have to take it easy on the shoulder. Running? No can do, but I try to walk some, and I have a stationary bike that gets used 3x per week, balance exercises are a must. Here's to a life well used. Cheers.

I do rehearse just about every day, and have for decades. Play out at least once a week, sometimes twice... my equipment even had to get lighter. When you buy a Fender Rumble because it weighs less... it's a sign.

Well.... that's enough organ recital for today,

To be fair, my pull ups are assisted... 👍

Welcome, and congrats on both the bass, gear and most importantly, your new daughter!

The San Dimas look to be good stuff. As do the PJB gear.
Actually, returned the Charvel and went for a Sire V7 1st gen that was new for $525. Feel like I got lucky with that. Charvel was nice, however there was something about the neck that didn't suit my hand, and the whole instrument was very non resonate when played. There was something in the pickups, or that particular pre amp, that didn't allow me to really relax and play; always felt like it needed a little adjustment to the knobs to get there and never really did. The Sire, pluck a string and the whole bass vibrates in a good way. Very alive instrument. The nut is a tad to high, but can fix that when the time allows. Really enjoying the Double 4 Plus and a Beat Buddy mini. Spent the last week resetting the studio and getting the older imac with Logic Pro on it all set in place. Begining recording is next up on the list, as is enjoying practice.

Thanks to all for the kind welcome.
