Double Bass $500 for a cab- what do we look at?

hi all

I have say $500 for a cab. Upright and electric. THis is the 95% of my work cab- theater, jazz, acoustic blending, pops orchestra stuff. My goal is to put this '95% of my work' cab on top of my 18" bag end cab for the big stuff.

I am not opposed to 112 or 210 in size, though smaller is quite acceptable. Don't need a tweeter, but want the cab to repond up to say 7kHz or better.

I have been looking at Low Down Sound LDS 2x8 cabs and Avatar too. I haven't heard them, though. THere's lots of stuff out there... Anybody have some advice for me?

Because you have a bigger cabinet when you need it, I think you should consider the little GK metal box. It has a very tight, punchy sound and is the smallest and lightest thing out there. I'm using it for everything now and getting compliments on my sound, both on DB and electric. No, it isn't full range or hifi, but somehow it just works.

A Wizzy 10 would also work well for you. I believe either of these would handle your needs quite well.

for anyone who cares, this is what I did:

I had Don Oatman build me a 2x8 3-way. HOLY CROW!! It's a beeeyoooty. Don't believe for one second that 8" speakers can't do basses.

I had him build it in Birch Plywood with natural finish, so it's pretty to look at, as well. 2 8's, one mid and one tweeter, with 2 knobs on the back to adjust the mid/hi speaker outputs. This thing is as much a musical instrument as an amp. And it has never ever ever buckled on me.

If you are looking for a small cab that can do it all, this is serious man. Absolutely NO trouble with a low B. It's rated at 450W conservatively. I thought I might need a 2nd cab for loud gigs. NOPE. It kills. It really throws the bass well.

I asked him for a cab with great clarity at low volume- 95% of my work is not loud. I play upright and electric, but mostly upright these days.


It is KILLIN.

I have one of the earlier cabinets that Don built with two eights. They are great cabinets. I'm curious, what drivers is Don using now? At the time he built the cabinet for me the best available 8" neos were the B&C'c my guess is that he used those newer Fatial 8PR 200's great speaker.

he took my order last spring just before the word got out that neo drivers would be way more expensive. So we talked about going ceramic or neo. I chose ceramic. He also agreed with me that ceramic tends to sound warmer and neodymium brighter (scratchier to my ears).
So I said, "Well, even when I use my 27lb cab on a gig, I put it on a dolly. And then I put it down and don't pick again it up until I put it back on the dolly. So the cab could weigh a ton, and it wouldn't change much..."
Eminence makes the ceramic 8's that are in there. I am not exactly sure which model. I'll have to check with Don. I am *guessing* it's the Beta 8 in a 16 ohm driver. It might be that Don has them built special for him.
