$500 moving violation

In a lot of states, my understanding is that the tickets generated only count as a civil fine, with no corresponding points attached, so it's equivalent to an equipment/non-moving violation. I'm almost positive that the red light camera fines in NY operate this way. California may be different, but I'd be surprised.

You may want to retain an attorney anyways. If you had partially entered the intersection just prior to the light turning red, then you may not be in violation. The camera, of course, snapped your pic in the intersection, but if you started the turn prior, then you didn't break the law. It's that way in NY, anyways, so it may be worth it to check CA's laws to see if there's a similar exemption there. A good traffic attorney may also know if the yellow light times are shortened at that particular intersection (common with red light cameras, unfortunately). If they're shorter than what is mandated federally, than you may have a case.

Let's make sure we don't go too much further down this road though. I would hate to get a perfectly good let's all pout with slobake thread shut down.

My only.point was that the point of this thread is to cheer you up, or some sort of misery loves company thing....not my views on government and law enforcement.

If I were there I would protest all hours of the night and throw bricks through drug store window as a show of solidarity!!!!

ya. I have a hard time believing Slobake deliberately ran the yellow. It's not hard to know when you're in the wrong with ablity to stop easily before the yield line, unless it's rigged with short yellow and long double red.

You never can tell with Slobake. I have a sneaking suspicion that he takes out his hatred for TNC on the public roads of San Fran. Yelling out his CR-V window telling people to get off his lawn, while re-enacting the chase scene from Bullitt......:D

Nope, that is my wife. She made my niece car sick flying up and down the hils here. I am no saint though, I have been known to yell out the window at others.
The camera is triggered by a plate in the ground. If you hit that plate after the light turns red it triggers the camera. They have about four photos of me. There is no doubt I was in the intersection after the light turned red. I missed by about a second but that is the way it goes.

Just trying to offer anything to help you, brother (except for money, mind you. No free lunches here;)). Those intersections with cameras were fairly notorious for cutting 1-2 seconds off of the yellow light when they first came out. That translates to roughly 60ft/second less distance to stop at 40mph. Since the 3rd parties that own the cameras directly benefit from tickets, and collect the majority of the fine money collected, there was an incentive to have more violations.

Over here, such tickets go to the registered owner of the vehicle, not the person in the photo, who may or may not be the registered owner.
If you get a ticket, and are not the person in the pic, you just write "I am not the person in the picture" on the form, and return it.
No more ticket.

I know many people who drive a car registered to their spouse/partner/ etc for this very reason.

No, not you. But if it makes you feel any better, I was driving in the rain yesterday and ran a yellow because I didn't want to just skid into the intersection. A camera might have caught me if there was one there.

I expect more than just a pity party out of a @slobake thread. I think it's worth talking about what really constitutes a penalty. I take my driving seriously, because I was taught by a law enforcement officer who put himself through law school as a cab driver. I have long argued that many traffic violations should carry much steeper penalties and demand more thorough prosecution. I see people every day on the road, yakking on the phone, tailgating while eating a Big Mac, because they need be exercising their liberties at all times.

And I see a gazillion people a year doing all kinds of things behind the wheel who never ever hurt anyone. I work in 92 buildings across more than a third of the state. I eat, chat, fiddle with the radio and even use voice commands on my phone to send emails. I have been in two wrecks and both were caused by older people who should have turned in their licenses a decade ago.

In my area, bicyclists (three wide on 55 mph roads) and the elderly are the most dangerous things on the road....along with the occasional deer.

I have had family in law enforcement as well. A few weeks of BLET defensive driving training doesn't exactly make them experts either.

No worries my friend. I read my other posts and I can see I haven't been clear. I entered the intersection after the light turned red and that is what the ticket is for. The plate is in the ground at the beginning of the intersection activates the camera after the light turns red. I was probably about two seconds late.
