After further reading this thread, I fear others may think I still may be this type of person. The instance in the phrase I quoted happened in 1999 or so. Had they not tossed it immediately, I would've fought the ticket as I'm 99% sure I wasn't speeding. I was a drunk (and drunk) at the time and never would've been speeding.

Didn't feel like reading all 7 page, so this has probably been brought up already. Are you sure that wasn't a typo? Or you may have read it wrong? In NY those tickets are $50. Hmm... or that might be the speeding ones, which I collect. For always forgetting where the cameras are and driving 36 mph on my way to work :/.
Ain't no secret that back in 1984 I had a bit of a drinking problem. Haven't touched alcohol since and I'm grateful for that. When I first put down the bottle, I needed to clean my life up a bit. Part of that was paying a bunch of parking tickets that had piled up. $800 worth (which was more like $8000 to me at that time). I was advised to schedule a hearing before a judge because I was told they would be forgiving if I could prove that I sought help for my problem, and was doing the right thing. Was told they'll sometimes just wipe your slate clean - or at least cut the amount in half.
It was great! I sat at a desk with a judge. Pulled out all my documentation, put my best sad face on, and gave the guy my story. He listened very empathetically, then asked me if I was finished. I said yes, and he asked, "Did you have money to buy alcohol?" I said, "Uhhh... well... sort of?" He said, "Then you had the money to pay these tickets!" He used his gavel as an exclamation point and said, "800 dollars!!!"
Sucked, but in hindsight was a great lesson. I wasn't going to get any special treatment because I was suddenly doing what I should have been doing all along anyhow. I needed to pay that $800. 30+ years later I realize it helped more than hurt me.

As far as I understand, post #121 is correct. Many municipalities have removed these cameras because they were proven to violate the 4th Amendment right to due process. Just sayin'.
