6 String BASS Club (Guitarists keep out!)

I haven't posted her in a while, so I'll show her off once again here. My Stambaugh SC fretless 6. She's equipped with the Roland GK-3b pickup as well now. Looking at doing a trio with a GR-20 and looper to help fill things out. She plays as good as she looks, IMHO.

I'm wondering how many of you play 6 string primarily and whether or not you've noticed any wrist discomfort on your left hand?
When I was in college I played a 6 string Ibanez almost exclusively for 2 years with no problems. Than I started to develop a cyst on the back of my left wrist and playing would range from no pain/discomfort to unable to even play a gig without extreme discomfort.

I picked up a Clover XP15.6 (great bass, here's some clips [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] & [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) but after a few months, started noticing some discomfort in my left wrist and flipped it for a 4 string.

Now I have two basses, one tuned B-G and one tuned E-C and I would really like to just get a 6 string and use it primarily but I'm wondering if it's a matter of my playing style, ie quit gripping the neck as hard, play with a lighter touch or if I'm just going to always have problems with the wider necks. I don't mind tight string spacing, so I'm really curious as to if I could pick up a 6 string with a narrow neck, tight string spacing, and adjust my playing to accomodate a lighter touch a la Gary Willis.

Any other guys have similar experiences or suggestions?

First start with a great instructor who can evaluate your playing. That's the most important thing. You can also get something like I have, a six with narrow string spacing at the bridge and nut, and with a shorter scale length. I never suffer from fatigue or discomfort, and I don't feel I've lost anything tone wise with the shorter scale. I also have a ramp on mine which has helped me play with a much lighter touch. All of that has helped me, but in the end I just had to practice playing more lightly. It helps to turn your amp up louder than normal and not play as hard as well.

Ahhh...thanks Andy, that's good advice. I should probably pick up an Ibanez 6 string with narrower string spacing and see how it goes for a while before plunking down any serious change on a new 6 string.
Any other stock models that have narrow string spacing?

That's exactly what I did before I ordered a custom bass with narrow spacing. I got a cheap older Ibanez 6 to try. I still went with a more narrow nut width and a 33" scale length, but I'm glad I tried the 16.5mm spacing on the Ibanez before I committed to something more expensive. The smaller bass really works for me personally. Good luck! I used to have problems with my hands all the time. It was because I was playing much too hard. It took some time and effort but my touch is much more controlled, and I don't have any problems with my hands any longer.

Micah, if you continue to have problems then check out this company with the torzal twist necks.
