6 string bass recommendations

hey all, i'm looking for a new bass (current is an ibanez rd50). I"ve been playing for about 7 or 8 years so i feel it's time for an upgrade =).

my budget is around $1500. i mostly play post rock/post metal/ambiet/soundscape stuff. i love bright sounding tone and spend most of time on the upper regions of the bass. my favorite tones are chancellor's (Tool), Caxide (isis), and the dude from Karnivool. I also really like the bass player from thrice's tone...nice and growly.

i would like to explore some extended range basses, 6 strings or more if budget allows. i've been looking at the Conklin GTBD-7, or carvin ic6...but i'm not sure if the tone on these basses is what i'm looking for.

PLEASE PLEASE any help would be appreciated, i'm feeling completely lost at the moment.

If you like a bright tone, the Conklin GT-BD7 would be PERFECT for you. I've owned two- they're capable of getting reeeeeeally bright. The neck is also very very thin and quite narrow at the nut; I transitioned from a 5-string straight to the GT-BD7 years ago without ever owning a 6, and that neck made the transition a breeze. I still like listening to my cruddy old recordings I made with it :)

Ibanez Prestige or a custom built Carvin. I admit I am biased. I've been playing 6 string basses forever (late '80s) and love them. In fact I'm off to the store to pick up my Ibanez Ashula 6 string in about 5 minutes! :hyper:

Hmm, prestige sounds nice, but a little out of my price range. I was looking at a custom carvin though. Not sure which model to go with though, i'm assuming theyeach have their own distinct sound.

hmm, sounds like this might be the one if i can find one used. i really want to start recording like ambient soundscapes and the extended range of the Conklin is really appealing to me, plus the pitchfactor can open up some more avenues to explore.

Of the 6'ers I've owned, the best bang for the buck was my Carvin LB76. However, my Dingwall AB-1 was absolutely incredible although probably hard pressed to find one for $1,500. Matt Pulcinella builds an awesome bass in his MPG Level 6 which was second only to my Dingwall. The Yamaha TRB-6P was killer too. One thing to consider is string spacing. I personally prefer the wider (18-20mm) spacing and the Carvin, Ibanez, etc...are too tight for me. My Conklin GT-7 was also a great bass for the money, but it too was a bit tight on the spacing.
