Which type of current bass would be the best for the money? I do like active pickups, but anything is game!

These days there are a lot of 6 string in that price range, I would not get one for less than that. I have a Schecter Studio 6 which is a little more . Schecter does have the some good 6 stringers. Here is a link Schecter Guitar Research 6+ String Electric Bass | Musician's Friend
