Used Yamaha TRB. TRB-II is nice too, although I prefer the full 19mm spacing of the earlier models.
These days there are a lot of 6 string in that price range, I would not get one for less than that. I have a Schecter Studio 6 which is a little more . Schecter does have the some good 6 stringers. Here is a link Schecter Guitar Research 6+ String Electric Bass | Musician's Friend

As a spoiler against the ESP and Shecter, I would add a used and upgraded Peavey Grind NTB.
They typically need minor fretwork and a rubdown with tung oil to sex up the finish. But if you're buying used, that's likely already been done.
I put a set of used EMG 45CS soapbars and a BTC control into one, and it sounded and felt stellar. I did all the work, but the total cost of the bass and parts was slightly less than the ESP.

Oh, and you can sometimes find a used Ibanez BTB 676 for that kind of money.

+10000000000 this. The bass player in my last band had this, and he also had a Mahogany (I believe) model. UNBELIEVABLE tone and the playability was fantastic. Easily worth twice what you'd pay.

If you can find a BTB 676 for under $500 jump on it I payed 1200 for mine but they were down to 900 when the stopped making them. I've owned lesser Ibanez 6ers and they do not hold up, the SR506 I owned was a total piece.
The peavey fury VI was alright, but I personally find you cannot get a true quality, stage ready 6 for less $1000, YMMV.

I am now split between Schecters and LTDs. Which has the better build quality and electronics at this price range?
I've always loved the tone of my Ibanez SR506, I think the Bartolini stock pickups are a step above some of the other brands mentioned (ESP, Schechter, etc.) but thats just my opinion, some people straight hate them. Dunno why, they just kinda do their job, really clearly and really well.

The Schecter Stiletto 6 definitely would be my pick, There Basses are pretty amazing for the money..
Sure, my 2 Z6s i got as b-stocks for $249 apiece, but regular price is $449... when they are in stock.
