6 X 10 Enclosures: Suggestions?

Not a big deal or priority, but I've been thinking of selling off a 4 X 10 and purchasing a 6 X 10. Trasnportation is not a problem as the cab will be trailer'd for most of its useful life. I'll still have a couple of 2 X 10's for smaller venues, rehearsals, etc. Just need a couple of brand / model suggestions. Power is not a problem but I would like to keep things below $1000 new or used.

Genz Benz. I love my XB2. It just won't fit in my sedan. :( It's clear, punchy despite being ported, and it can rumble the earth. From what I hear, a Berg 610 could be a great choice as well.

Do not buy the Ampeg! I A/B'd my Genz 610 with 610HLF and they do not even compare. Try starting a thread on the 610HLF. Plenty of people will tell you how it was an attempt at a compromise between an 810E and a 410HLF and how it managed to not come close to either. :p

Try all of the above if you can but I wouldn't wish the Ampeg on anyone. You can get a whole lot more cab for the same cost.

Okay...frankly, I thought I would see dissenting opinions on the Dr. Bass cab before anything else but I appreciate the input. With that in mind...

Dr. Bass has a really bad rep (and rightfully so) but I don't hear much about the product itself. Some cabs have actually made it into the hands of end-users and I stumbled across one in Richmond. Is this also something that should be avoided?

How bout the SWR Goliath Sr. 610?? Can handle a load of power and is Loud as hell!! It has a SPL of 110db's @1W1M. Use to own that cab and she was very clear and punchy!! So yeah my vote as always goes for the SWR!! Best Of luck!! Cheers Mate!!~Elliot

Hey Riis,

Some Dr Bass cabs seem to be all right design-wise, others not so great. And there different woofer models as options going into the same box and tuning, and they weren't all that suitable. I think he wasn't so much a cab designer as a throw it in there and make it look cool type. Some cabs ended up being decent or better by the law of averages, others abysmal, at least if you are playing them hard and loud.

So I'd try before buying.

It has a sensitivity rating that high? That seems absurd!

Found this tidbit in another thread supporting that:

"I looked up a lot of info while looking for a cab. While volume isn't what I was after, I can tell you that the Goliath Sr is one of the loudest out there. With a sensitivity of 110 and power handling of 1200 watts, it will reach 140db. For comparison, the Berg NV610 does 131 and the Genz Benz GB 610T-XB2 hits 134...."

NV610 gets my vote for several reasons. First being I own one and it's hands down the best cabinet I ever owned. Other reasons are that despite it's umph, the amount of speakers, and the power it put out, it's relatively light and easy to move around. The ability to tilt and pull it makes it easier to transport than some combos. It's also relatively thin (16" wide I think) which makes it fit into more tight spots than lots of other cabinets. Including my trunk. Love the punchy tight in your face tone also.

I would be a little wary of using specs to make a cab decision. IMO you really need to hear a cab and even better still try it in a band situation. I have owned an SWR Goliath Senior 610 and it is a great cab, and I was able to play it side by side with my Berg 610. For me I preferred the tone of the Berg and the SWR has gone. I can assure you that there was no issue of loudness with either cab being clearly louder than the other using my SVT VR, so use your ears and avoid the specs on that point. One point, the Bergantino is a sealed cabinet which does suit tube amps particularly well, although I see you have a GK and there are a few GK owners on TalkBass who are very happy with their Berg 610s. Hope this helps, in the end it is always horses for courses and your ears that should decide.

Pretty much nonsense. And you can reason it through a number of ways. If someone actually had a driver that allowed a 6 dB edge when reproducing the same bandwidth at high levels, every driver company in the world would be reverse engineering it. Because the far larger SR market would value it too. Actually we are talking alien technology here. The kind marketers dream up, that is.
