I sold my 810e and Svt-cl head because i was tired of breaking my back every weekend. I bought a Mesa M6 and Ampeg 610av. I absolutely love the tone I'm getting.. I haven't figured out why everyone here hates those cabs but I love mine. Maybe ampeg produces a good one occasionally and I was lucky enough to get one of the good ones.. Or maybe I just have 'My own opinion'

Well, I found a Bergie 610 here on TB but the seller has disappeared from the face of the earth. Honestly, I hope he is okay health-wise, family-wise, and employment-wise! On a more selfish note, I really do / did want the cab. In the meantime...

I found an Ampeg SVT610hlf in my backyard, supposedly in very good / excellent condition for $400. Not my first choice but I'm wondering if you would consider that to be a near-bargain price?

I also have bichon turds in my backyard...those were free.

Yes, $400 would be a good price for the Ampeg 610. I got mine for $500

I actually "downsized" my rig from two Fender 4x10 cabinets (basically a 8x10) to a Mesa PowerHouse 6x10. It was a great move on my part because not only does the Mesa 6x10 sound louder, clearer, and overall way better than the two 4x10's, but I also bought it used at a very cheap price and it is in good physical and cosmetic condition. I enjoy having less to load and unload and it gets the job done over and over again. I would from experience recommend the Mesa PH 6x10, however I too have heard a lot of good things about that Berg 6x10 as well. If you can I would try some out before buying too.

If you're looking for a more modern sound - lots of low end, adjustable horn for lots of highs - then either Mesa's PH610 or SWR's Goliath Sr are the best I've played so far... I have to admit that I haven't played the Genz Benz cab, although I'd certainly consider it, given what I've seen from their company thus far...

+1 Depending on your tonal preferences, I'd probably go for either the Berg NV610 (definitely a "good vintage Ampeg" vibe), the Mesa/Boogie PH610 (big, punchy rock tone, but with a good bit of clarity), or the Glockenklang 6-Box (similar to the Mesa, but more controlled, super powerful in the low-mids, not quite as warm/round as PH610).

Zoob: If you're looking at a 6x10 that cops the same vibe as your Acme's, that could really be a challenge. Most 6x10's with a horn don't have that same sound or feel...and the Berg NV610 is even more dissimilar. I've owned Acme Low B-4's and a Berg NV610. Totally different cabinets.

However, the NV610 was able to capture the sound I was going for much more than the Acme's were.

But, if the Acme sound is what you're seeking in a 610, you may need to go custom and add that midrange and tweeter.

The suggestion of the fEarful 15/6 is actually a good one. If you want the tilt-back form factor of the 610, then opt for the 1515/66 or have Don at LDS build you one. He's got a 2x15/2x6 on his site for $700. Cheaper than the Berg...and probably closer to Acme's sound.

You feel that fEarful could be as big sounding/bassy as a 610? I play in a metal/rock band with a loud guitarist and drummer, and I do prefer the "modern" tone, and ride the lowB and E. I'm not knockin' the idea, cause if I could get rid of my WT400/410XLT for that to carry 'round, I would. I was looking into a 15/6 with a 15/sub. Cause I'm still not boomy enough, and was gonna go the 6x10 route myself.

I've had an SWR Goliath Sr with 6x10"s for several years and its hands-down the best sounding cabinet I've ever owned. Before I bought it I looked at as many similar cabs as i could find and settled on this. My decision was based on 1) Sound - I only considered cabinets I could play through using my own bass and head; 2) Ease of Transportation - no speaker cab this size is going to be easy to move, but some are better than others. The SWR was both lighter and smaller than the Ampeg; and 3) Cost - I was lucky that I found a used cabinet in new condition, but would have bought a new one if I had to.

I was considering the 810 or the new VS412. I tried the little LB112 and it had a really sweet sound, and it's the same speakers in the 412 apparently.
The 610 and 810 are sealed I gather, how would you describe the sound (always tricky I know).

Here's what I've run across so far:

*Ampeg SVT610hlf ($400 / local): My first choice & refusal. Certainly within my budget and driving range. I'll let my ears make the decision.

*Schroeder 412 (~$700 / Raleigh): An unknown to me but my brother lives in Raleigh so transport is no problem. Jorg remembered the cab and filled me in on some addt'l details.

*Bergie NV610 (Charlotte): Still waiting to hear from the seller. This is a particular challenge as I've choreographed a series of hand-to-hand transfers to get the box from western NC to Virginia Beach.

*Mesa 412 (~$1200) and Mesa 410/115 ($1600): New and available immediately from a local dealer. Big mambo cabs but outside my budget. Truth be told: I don't want to drop that kind of coin on a box that will sit in a trailer and be gigged 2-3 times / month. The retailer is also a Bergie dealer and flat-out refuses to order from Jim...which kind of ticks me off.

Thanks for letting me get my thoughts in order.
