'62 Precision vs '72 Precision: can you hear the difference?

Exactly. It happens to the black edges of my sunburst ‘72 as well. After a few days it dries out and goes back to normal

I'm noticing people finding the same difference in opposite basses. Wondering how much our own speakers or headphones color that conclusion. Anyway fun thread to pass the quarantine with!
I've been letting each one play then switch to the other etc while reading through these posts, I actually forget which one is playing at times but like most I probably made up my mind within about 10 seconds of each clip so I have questioned myself a few times as they're playing, is this A, is this B, this one sounds good is it the right one
? I have picked the one liked best every time though if I've lost track so at least I know the one I like the best.

I think that's when I start to question myself. I usually judge a good P bass on how the open E string sounds. If I hear a good loud punchy E I automatically think, now this is a good P bass. I have been just letting them play though in the background and things stick out at times to me. They both sound great though, I'd be happy with either bass.
I don't know which is which but I prefer the tone of B which is a tad darker and smoother than A.
Yes, that's one thing I noticed when I got a US P-Bass, the low E is nice and punchy and clear compared to the Mexican P-Bass I had and the Squier P-Bass that I still have.

I had a nice black maple necked 72 fretless P bass some years ago and the E was dead and nothing I did could fix it, was highly irritating. I like resonant basses. I've got a couple of new Fenders are they're both nice and resonant with good fat sounding E strings. You should try out La Bella Deep Talkin' flats, they are the best string I've ever tried on a P bass bar none.
I've never tried flats. I don't know, maybe I should. The American Performer P-Bass I have, the low E is so loud and huge sounding. That Bass is so loud even when it's not plugged in. It's almost as loud as an acoustic. I can play along to music without even plugging it in. The American Performer Jazz Bass I have is so much quieter when it's not plugged in.

The '72 is to be the prize, with about 1% of it awarded to each correct voter.
I like the sound of B a little more than A. As for which is which, I'll guess B is the 62.
Owning 63 and 69 P’s myself, i thought this would be a no brainer when opening this topic. Well it turned out i was wrong. they sound very similar and more importantly they both sound terrific. I voted B for the 62.
B sounds more open on the highs with just a little tiny bit of hair in the low mids, your 72 is the more attractive bass visually thus a better live instrument, but your friends 62 has a better pup making it the superior studio option. If I am incorrect then your 72 is an absolute keeper!
I just tried listening to them both with my hich are actually pretty good sounding speakers, 15 watts ported speakers. The two basses sound much more similar with the speakers than they did with my earphones.

How come the few 57's & 58's I've played sound different than the 60's?
My buddies 57' had a really sharp V neck. He later had a 58' that was much rounder in the back.
These two basses were similar to others we have played and are different than the 60's basses (it helps when you have a vintage guitar store at your disposal and the owner plays bass).
MAYBE THE ALUMINUM GUARD MAKES A DIFFERENCE????

Now, a clever man would put the '72 first, because he would know that only a great fool would expect the vintage '62 to be listed first.. I'm not a great fool, so I can clearly can not choose '62. But you must have known I was not a great fool; you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the '72....
