63 Fender Jazz. Need Advice

Good news, Everybody!

Finally got my soldering iron back from my friend >.>

Still waiting on the new nut to come in, so I wired everything up in a squire P, to make sure it all worked. I first wired the vintage pickups into the squire electronics, to make sure the pickups were good. Everything gave green lights from there, so I then wired them back into the vintage electronics, and after a grounding issue (quickly squashed) she was throaty as a grand dragon. Both of the pots are a bit difficult to turn. The volume especially. Nothing that requires tools, but it's a bit annoying. Any quick fixes for this issue? I've never had issues with pots in the past, and never had to maintain them in any way. Always just replaced.

This project is really coming together. Now just waiting on the mail. Strings, nut, chrome bridge and pickup cover and a new brass pickguard.

Excited.

Well, since I've already got a buyer on the line, I'm not looking to do Any finish I can't do myself. In my attempt to restore the brass puckguard, I all but ruined it. I'm not convinced that its brass. Seems to be brass plated. So I'm getting a replacement vintage brass pickguard, only difference between the old one is that its less corroded and has holes for the pickup cover and thumbrest in the correct position.

I could be wrong, but I think those pickguards are anodized aluminum, so you pretty much need to live with anything that a damp cloth won't clean up.

caig deoxit will loosen up the pots. it contains a lube and cleaner to make them operate smoothly.

Agreed. The Caig stuff is good to have around, and better for pots than tuner cleaner because of the lube qualities.

It looks like the new ones, the '57 reissue gold pickguards are aluminum, this is not the same pickguard I have, as one: heavy as ****, two: the 57 has the thumbrest in the wrong spot, and so do all the reissue pickguards.

It's certainly brass plated, but it's most likely steel beneath. In either case, my attempts to remove the corrosion brought off more brass than anything, so I'm getting a new one. Still vintage, and the one that came with this bass isn't original anyways. Maybe the new one wont shot a sliver of the control cavity.

I still can't believe the electronics sound as good as they do. It's heavenly.

The pickguard originality was never in question. It was clear from the start that it wasn't original, but it's the originality of it's condition. To me, it was originally with a brass pickguard, so I want to try to keep it as I found out. Just looking to get her back on her feet in working condition.

Which is going great so far.

Also, the trade is for a bass worth significantly more than 500. I wouldn't have paid that much if I weren't sure I could get what I wanted out of it.

okay. whatever.
good luck.

Thanks, John. Your advice, as well as everyone else's has been invaluable, and has in fact been heeded in most cases. Deciding against an oil finish and black hardware was in large part due to these forums.

I've actually taken another crack at dry sanding the pickguard. Spent about an hour at it. Figured I had already written it off. Nothing to lose, right? Turned out really well, actually. Not entirely what I expected, but I'll keep it.

Now I just need someone to outbid me in the next two hours on this solid polished brass pickguard:
Vintage P-BASS PICKGUARD made of SOLID POLISHED BRASS - eBay (item 180638543029 end time Mar-16-11 20:47:11 PDT)

Any takers? My max bid is 24.85. I would appreciate it if someone snatched this up from me. I know there's a lot of P love out there, and it would look insane on a solid black or trans black finish. Maybe even a white finish?

It ends in 2 hours or so. Just throwing it out there.

Thanks again, guys.
Michael

I've been looking forward to an alembic for some time, so the closer I get, and the better things go, the more excited I get for that epic. I plan on ordering a q-filter from Alembic and installing it myself, but I want to get some quality time with her as is before I go gutting her.

I am really looking forward to seeing how this bad boy plays, though.

It's sort of on loan currently. It's an odd situation. He let me hold onto the bass, and fix it up. If this trade actually goes through (and once I get the cash) I owe the guy $500. Otherwise, if the trade falls through, I either decide to buy the bass for 500, or hand it back to him all fixed up.

Chances are, if the trade falls through, I'll still buy it from him.

The bass did not originally come with a metal pickguard.
