'66 dot/bound J tribute

Bouncing back to my Roasted Ash J.., I decided it was time to remove the "Fender Jazz Bass" decals from the hs face (that I applied), as after all it isn't exactly a Fender product. I don't want to get all judge-mental about it as is so common here on tb - it was just more important to me at one time, and now it isn't. I love the way that bold Fender era decal looked - it's probably my favorite style. Maybe someday I'll own an actual Fender with that logo - whatever. Anyway, I had to go way back in my files to find a pic as I did it years ago on a Fender authorized Allparts ebony-boarded neck (that I still love and have played often since mounting it) and found this lovely GP shot. As far as authentic, I learned after applying it that the "Custom Contour" decal should be on the same 'plain' (not tilted) as the rest. When I learned that it always sorta' bugged me but I just let it go - nerdizm has limits. So speaking of being nerdy - I pondered how to deal with a blank hs face. After sanding it even, I applied this vintage wrapping paper I had with Elmers spray adhesive. (works great by the way) Then I shot a nice thick coat of StewMac clear satin lacquer on top of it to protect and seal it. As a bonus, it penetrated the paper and allowed the hs wood-grain to show through. The result is very pastoral and just makes me smile - I love this bass even more now. Sometimes I get too far down the rabbit hole dealing with all the details of these basses, so since bunny's are part of the cute critters depicted - it'll be a nice reminder to not take it all so seriously. As @Chef here on tb quoted : "smile more".

HA! I love it! Great left turn, never saw that coming. I am waiting on my Squier P getting a J added, and matching HS color. I didn't have any kind of decal so I'll be getting it back blank. I'm not too keen on Fenderizing the HS, I'd really like to just put a white Squier P logo on it, but nobody's interested in faking Squiers ;). I know, make my own, lotsa info here, search the interweb, blahblahblah...I like JIO's idea. gonna ponder some mo'

I think aside from its cute smile-inducing subject matter, I actually like the quality of the drawings and the soft wood-like visual 'tone' of it which works on a couple of levels. From a distance (as you can start to see in the full vertical bass pic) - if you just glance at it it could appear to be a burl wood veneer. Many threads on tb are filled with such exotic wood examples. I like when you can see something in something else and when something flip-flops visually - like Salvador Dali's 1951 photograph "In Voluptate Mors" of a scull made up of naked bodies. And the more active your imagination is, the more it happens.

That's funny! I can't recall where I got the piece of it I have, but it's definitely gift-wrapping paper and old. (very thin paper) It's possible that design or one very much like it was also used for wallpaper. After seeing the result, I now have my eyes open for wrapping paper that could work in this application. The possibilities are endless!

I reassembled my P/J Jaguar with a (cheap but decent) Mighty Mite (Fender authorized) P-neck and some cool (also cheap) tuners. Now that I've got the Jazz bases covered, I decided to favor it as a P-bass. This was the bass that started me on the whole '66 trajectory - a real instigator this one! (figures it's a P!) I'm not particularly a loyalist in terms of the P or J camps, I like them both for exactly the reasons they are different.

How wide are those japanese thunders compared to original clover tuners?

I currently don't have that bass to measure - but if you mean the width of the pegs/buttons - I'd guess 1-1/4" as the Schaller Deluxe tuners they are modeled after are 1.5" and I'm pretty sure they were a bit smaller.

That's exactly what I meant...

Being smaller in width - Maybe they would fit a modern thunderbird without the pegs touching each other..?

It's very possible - modern T-bird tuners are 1-3/8" wide. I'll guess they are about the same and are very nice tuners indeed. :thumbsup:
