6X12 build?

I do like the look of that Tecamp, thanks for pointing it out. I'm thinking a
design very close to that, but without the tweeter

There is a very intelligent tweeter ssystem on Tecamp cabs. First three steps on the L-pad uses a lower frequency, sounding smoother and less agressive than the last two steps.

I prefer having the L-pad on the lowest step, step one, this gives a bit of a sparkle to the sound.
I have the old version with neodymium speakers, they like to have a bit support by a bit of a tweeter.

The new cabs have ceramic speakers, as I told before. This speakers are known to be more brilliant , they don't need "tweeter support" for clarity and sparkle.

As I like to push the tubes in my preamps hard to get tube saturation, bit of an overdrive, tweeters tend to sound harsh. Not in those Tecamp L 810 and 215 cabs I use. When used as I do.

Glad to hear you like the design of the Tecamp classic cabs, the new design of Tecamp.

Think about using a tweeter with a L-pad and the ability to shut it down completely. This may help cutting through - and give you a higher value when you think sabout selling the cab.

I'm thinking series / parallel - 3 sets of 2 @ 4ohm drivers= 2.67 ohms total load

My head is a super bassman 300 that can do 2 ohms, so I'm good there.

Or 3 sets @ 8ohm drivers = 5.34 total load

Any significant diff between the two? If I ran amp at 4ohms with a 5.34ohm load would it be noticeably quieter than 2.67@2? I've never ran a 2 ohm cab, does the sound get mushy down there?

Also, I think neo is out. too pricey. I'll deal with the weight.

IMHO... No.

P.S. Besides, if your head does 2 Ohms, going 4 Omhs will allow you to add a second cab [I kill myself!!] if you need more volume.

I know, right? ... I saw that. Wow. They aren't really built for bass either, mostly screws and no bracing. They look pretty though.

I figure I'll get the empty cab built for ~ $200 in materials if I go voidless. Plus another $100-150 in tolex/cloth/wiring.

Edit: just checked and I have enough cloth left over from a previous build, so the budget is getting even more comfy.

I think a 6x12 would be just awesome. Believe it or not, the reason at least one manufacture (Avatar) doesn't make those bigger cabs like a 2x15 etc is shipping. I emailed Dave about a 2x15 with 3015's and that was his answer, shipping.

And size wise, 612 tucks nicely between 215 and 810, with more than twice the surface of a 215 and almost the same speaker surface as 810. Makes me wonder why there aren't more 612s out there. I'm guessing oddball impedance scared people off maybe?

Personally I think it's a bit overkill. I swapped out the factory speakers in my 410 cab and Ive been told to lower my stage volume by sound guys every gig since and this is playing gigs where many of the bands that play before or after us run 810s. Smaller cab better speakers would be my vote.

I'm just having some fun with ya. I now I'm a weeny. Last year I sold my 150 pound Trace Elliot rig, and now my total rig (head, 2x12 cab) is under 50. At 2am, I am a happy man.

Tecamp made a lightweight 6x12, it was a one handed lift. But if had a funny impedance so I ditched it because valve amps. It isn't a great configuration if you are trying to build for practicality, staggered vertical 4x12 comes out a much more useful form actor and impedance.

Electric makes an empty 612 shipped in USA for 900. It looks like a beast and you can choose your color and grill cloth...maybe they would send you the plan cheap if you mentioned you were building it for yourself
