6X12 build?

Hey TB,

I built a 2x15 Sunn clone cab a couple years ago, it turned out very well, but I'm feeling the urge to build something new. Not to replace the 2x15, just something different... you know... I have builder GAS, I suppose.

I was thinking a ported 6x12

6x12 cabs are a rare-ish bird, but a few companies have made them Sunn, Peavey, um, some others?

Does anyone have any experience with a 6x12? Good, bad, mud? Are they rare because they suck? Super great? Meh?

Also, what 12s for bass do you recommend? I'm thinking neo to bring the weight down.

In a world where you have to go to small cab builders to get a 412" because everybody is thinking of 112"-cabs, the major manufacturers don't think that there is a need for a 612"-cab.

But I say, there is some need. As long as 810" and 215" are made, there is a need for 612"-cabs.

The only company that comes to my mind that still has a 612" is Tecamp. They have a 612 XXL cClassic with 1800 Watt@ 4 or 8 ohms . And only 90 lbs. So you see, a 612 does not have to be heavy. And they use ceramic speakers, so there is more weight to cut.

I am not good in DIY, but there is a small german sshop that does build the cab you like. His 412 is a legend, he made a excellent 218 and he is thinking of building a 415. So he would be the man I would call if I would get tired of my 215" and 810".

So if you are gifted and able to build a goodDIY-cab , go for it!

Is that the folded Sunn cab you speak of?

Sealed would save tuning/design time, but I've really been into the open sound of a slot port lately.

The idea of sealed with dividers like an SVT isn't a bad one though...

I do like the look of that Tecamp, thanks for pointing it out. I'm thinking a design very close to that, but without the tweeter

I would love to hear one. It would weigh a lot as my ampeg bottom loaded with 10's and a 15" weighed 180 pounds. It had wheels as it needed it. I had a folded horn 15" bottom (custom made) with an altec speaker and man did sound loud and sweet. I've been looking for a used 15" altec. I like a mix of both mid size and large speakers and running two amps (one for each bottom).
