7 string bass is finished...

Bottomfeeders... I havent posted in a while, so it is about time to show the finish pics of the 7 string. First, let me say that Jeff has been awesome to work with. Playing a Head bass is my honor, this is the finest bass I've ever played. The neck is solid and perfectly contouring to lead easy fret-work. The asthetics ... well... see for yourself.... beautiful. The Glockenlang preamp is really nice sounding. It is not as "coloring" as many preamps I've played, it just sounds great. This is mostly due to the pickups built by Carey Norstrand. Amazing!!! Can't say enough about this combination of pickups and preamp. So without further notice I give you...

pardon my ignorant question, but why are the frets bent like that. Does that help in some way? Does it make it easier to "reach" notes, specifically closer to the pegs?

I've never seen a fretboard like that... interesting...

They are fanned frets. Many builders (notably Dingwall) use them as it allows for different scale lengths between the bass and treble sides. So you could have a 35" low B string and a 32" high C string or something along those lines.

Beautiful bass by the way.

....which allows for much more even string to string consistency and response, which can become an issue when dealing with extended range basses that are of one scale length. It's kinda along the lines of a grand piano.

right... fanned frets. The scale is 37"-33" lo F#-hi B. My once playing a fanned fret scale... I love it. I couldn't play this scale bass without... gets a little weird past the 15th fret, but totally more comfortable than standard. :)
