It always makes me nervous drilling into wood that has a clear coat - so easy to chip.
that looks a lot cooler than i thought it was going to, i hope you can post some sound clips or a video once it's all finished

At the risk of being lambasted by the P bass true believers, I must disclose that it's a jazz bass neck.![]()
The pickguard is from Artisan Guitar Creations. Roger Wendover did not have any walnut in stock that was large enough, so he let me pick out the piece from his supplier. That was cool - made it more personal/custom.View attachment 501118
Now you are talking Doner!
I have been a wood advocate for years and years and can never figure out why anyone would cover up beautiful wood with paint and cheap plastic. This, my friend, is a classy and elegant solution. This is such a delicate balance. You don't want it to be too much figure against too much figure, and if you go with a fairly straight forward wood for the pick guard, it can still be - why you covering up that beautiful body with a plain wooden pick guard?
Nice job, it's not an easy thing to get the elements to breathe together and be as one - but you have succeeded here, iMHO. I don't know about anyone else, but I am checking out the link to this Artisan web site for my next pick guard.
Thank you kindly sir. I'm surprised you don't see more makers of wood PG's and more in use. Some don't look quite right as you say. I think with the dark PG this one might have looked a little better with a maple neck and fingerboard (or a birdseye headstock) on the wenge, but I was trying to do something unique and really like that you don't have to finish wenge or ebony. It's hard to know what it will look like until all the parts show up but I'm pretty happy.
Hey is that weight/heft/weapon quote from Sting?
Hey Doner
Yep, from Sting. Been on here many years and no one has ever noticed it before or at least never asked about it!
Here is my mapleglo Rick. First thing I did was remove that god awful cheap-ass plastic pick guard and replace it with a mahogany one.

Cool picture. It's a little hard to see the PG, but the mahogany on mapleglo sounds like a great combo - two understated grain patterns that would not clash and with some good contrast.
Not sure where/when, but I kinda remember reading a Sting interview where he said that.
