73 SVT Blueline or Blackline?

OK - cant wait to try it. I always liked the SBX cabs because they are sealed - not ported. I know the Ampeg 810's are also sealed so im hoping this combo will sound great. Nothing against ported cabs (the GK Neo412 is on my short list!) but the sealed SBX are some of the most focused and punchy cabs Ive ever played through!

From my experience it is my belief the Bluelines where the ones built in Linden NJ and the Blacklines where when they where made by Magnavox.I had two SVT,s during my life the first was a 80 reissue I think built bt Skunkworks I didnt keep it long.But then in the 90,s I picked up a 70 Blueline with 6550,s and it heads over the sound of the Skunkworks.I would go with the Blueline its the REAL SVT ! But heavy 90+ lbs

The blackline has been well maintained, looks like it hasn't been abused, and is in good working order. This is a massive plus. The blueline has issues and may cost an extra few hundred in maintenance, even more if it needs new tubes. These are really important considerations when deciding which to get.

They are both great SVT's. A blueline is more desirable in terms of looks. In terms of sound, they are equal.

If you want a good gigging amp that comes without any issues at a good price, I would go with the blackline. If your heart tells you to get the blueline then don't put yourself in a position where you regret passing it up.

I am 100% with this line of thinking. I am going today at noon to pick up the blackline - I know the blueline is more sought after and I would probably go that route if they were in the same condition - but since the blackline is much better aesthetically and functionally and the repair shop that did the work said it's in great shape, I think its a no-brainer :)

I think that b-o-t has some good advice for ya, there. FWIW, we did a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], and even with old tubes, that head rocked. I'm thinking that it could benefit from a new, quieter fan (any recommendations?), but other than that, it's still the standard by which all of my other tube heads are measured.

OK. $2500 is a bit too steep also. Unless perfect and barely used.
I wouldn't pay that much for one.

The black one sounds like the better idea.

Tom, I've used the Ebm-papst 4530Z fan in vintage SVT's. It is ultra quiet and has an air flow rate that is a bit above the 60 CFM of the original. I get them from Newark or Mouser.

Thanks Tom and B-O-T - I just picked up the Blackline! I can't believe the condition this is in. You guys helped me make my decision! I am very thankful for the people on this forum and all the comments, good and bad! The Blueline had way too many issues and was looking at more $ to get it right, just wasn't worth it for me.

To answer an earlier question - the back panel says "Made by the Ampeg Co. a division of Magnavox - USA"

That's awesome! I always have said every bassist should own a good all tube amp at least once. :)
