8 Jazz Bass Pickups test on youtube

I like Hum canceling JB pickups. I have had used many this kind of pickups such as:

Dimarzio ULTRA JAZZ
Bartolini 9CBJD-1
Bartolini 9CBJD-3
Delano JC4-HE/M2
Nordstrand NJ4SV
Nordstrand NJ4SE
Suhr Humphrey JB
Duncan Custom Shop Linear Humbucker
Duncan Apollo

And Now, I am using NJ4SV to obtain modern sounding.
Also, using Duncan Apollo & CS Linear humbucker for smooth tone purpose.

For Aguilar.
I once ordered AG 4J-HC. But it was broken(no sound. may breaking of wire).
I did not replace that. Just returned. No more stocks in Japan at that time. might take much time.

I believe that the Nordstrand are also equally well sounding ... why you don’t update the video including them as well?
Anyway, a couple of days ago, wandering thorough Youtube, I watched a promotional video from Aguilar in which a good NY session man, whose name is Jason although I don’t remember his surname, played all jazz bass pickups manufactured by Aguilar installed on the same bass ...
If you listen to it, you may notice that, to my big surprise, the hum-cancelling model is crispy and bright even more than the single coil 60s version of the pickup and on par with the 70s version ... I was really positively surprised as generally dual in-line coil pickups tend to be too much bass-oriented and, sometimes, muddy ... I’ll attach a link to the video ...



At around minute 5 Jason plays a sample tune titled 70’s funk ... HC pickups perform better than all other models IMO and I believe this is quite interesting ...

I may have to try some D’Addario XLs when I’m due for a string change. I have used them before and thought they were just OK.

NJ4SV is on other bass, so it is not good for comparison purpose.

Yes, I notice that Aguilar HC has clear High. Also has good low. But it seems it do not have sweet-mid.
And, I feel Nordstrand NJ4SV has similar character and much balanced.
But it depends on this Video situation, I will test Aguilar HC someday.

This "Abby" pickup was originally installed on some special Japanese shop model of FenderCustom Shop Jazz Bass.
My friend (The Owner of that bass) lent me tha Pickup for this Test.

I’ve listened to all samples and changed my judgement:

1. Lollar.
2. Klein.
3. The 2 SD models.

I find the Fender models a little too polite.
A good contender from Fender would be the Fender PV ‘64, which, however, hasn’t been tested.

Yes, if you're replacing broken pickups, you're absolutely right. But it seems to me that the OP has a pretty fine bass that's he's just trying to further fine tune. We tend to spend a lot of time and money looking to make incremental tonal improvements rather than just appreciating what we have and making it sound better by refining our technique rather than our gear.

I'm not sure but pole pieces look even, not raised in the center so in modern offering they would be 70. I had 60 version first and didn't like the raised pole pieces, and highs where bit smoother than in 70 (I have now). They are so good sounding and with compressor and good preamp you can tailor whatever sound you like. But that is applicable for many good Jazz basses. For me it was important to have real single coil pickups and there were not too many options for 5 stringer.
