8 String Bass In Progress

We had a glue line in the body that didn't line up exactly straight. We used brads to hold the pieces in alignment, but somehow it still managed to slip. So we had to take the lower wing off of the body.

We started out by baking the body for a good two hours at about 250 F. I had read that 250F should be sufficient to break titebond... I guess it depends on the wood and how good of a joint that you have. Needless to say, this didn't work as expected. Next we used a large aluminum knife that we'd built as well as some various other tools and a heat gun. Some of the glue joints did release in the oven, so we took the upper wing off as well. This took about another 2 hours before we got the wings off. Another hour to re-true the joints and glue up the body in a more stable manner that was less prone to slippage (longer brads and better body support).

Last I saw the body was still in clamps. If anything remotely like this happens again I am going to spectacularly destroy it.

What exactly do the eight knobs do?

Edit: Hey, look! Post#1,100! Oh, & the bass looks very nice.

So there are two separate tone sections, active and passive. Active is going to be a vol/vol setup with an Aguilar OBP-3 and the passive is going to be a vol/vol/tone with push/pull pots on the volumes for coil tapping, push/pull pot on the mid for mid freq and push/pull on the tone for cap value selection. So that's 3 knobs on the passive and 5 on the active for a total of 8. There's also going to be a 4PDT switch to select the tone section to which the pickups are routed.

The pickups covers are roughed out now and the neck is glued in.

Well, the pickup covers are done as far as the outside is concerned and not counting finish sanding and the actual finish. The pickup routes are also done. I now have a lot of finish sanding to do before the finish can be put on. Also, we have to drill the holes for the rear mounting for the pickups.

The adjustment for the pickups is going to be on the back. There are going to be stand-off rods mounted to the back of the pickups and there are holes drilled in from the back of the bass, these are countersunk and there are allen head style machine bolts that adjust the pickup height. I didn't want any chrome or black scews on the front of the bass.
