810 Dilemma

Question for you tayste, does your 810 have a kickplate and skid rails? The one I saw had neither and I thought it was a little strange that they did not provide the extra protection...unless the tolex is extra durable.

Yeah its a matter of the speakers in it, mine I believe are eminence and it sounds really raw and perfect for rock.

mine does have a kick plate but no skids they are both optional extras (far as I know no cost) They don't really sell a lot of the 8x10's so they some of the ones in shops aren't quite as ideal as they should be.

picked up the legend b810s today. i decided to start by replacing 4 speakers and see if there is any improvement. Unfortunatly it is really hard to tell, there is still quite a bit of speaker distortion but I can't make out which speakers are actually distorting. At more sane volumes I could tell that these b810s produce more low end (but not muddy at all) than the stock speaker, which i think are emminence from 1976. the highs are nice as well, not too shrill but just enough for a bass guitar. the cab seemed to fill the room more than usual but it could be because the rest of the band was not there it will be interesting to hear how they sound in a mix. I might try discconect the remaining 4 stock speakers and run the cab as an 8 ohm 410 to hear just the B810s on their own but I will have to figure out how to wire that first.

Consider the new Ampeg NEO 410 (handles 850 watts) or Avatar NEO 410 (handles 1000 watts). Each weighs about 64 lbs, is much easier to move around than that old 70's 810, and handles 3 or 4 times more power. I've got two NEO 410's with an SVT-1000 but usually only take one cab to gigs because it's plenty loud and I like the tone.

I don't have any problems moving the 810 around and weight is not an issue. If there is one piece of gear that I must have it's a sealed 810. Personally I can't stand the sound of NEO speakers, I just wanted a little more headroom out of my cab. I just ordered another 4 B810 speakers, and the place I bought from agreed to buy my old speakers so the overall price is not too bad . Once I'm back home next weekend I will try the cab out again with all 8 speakers replaced.

Yeah that's why I had picked those CTS drivers up initially. Unfortunately saying these are similar to the CTS doesn't help. Most people want the real thing.

Replaced the remaining 4 original speakers with the B810s. The cab sounds fantastic. First of all the B810s are a lot more efficient, the cab is a lot louder now and I had to turn down my volume knob by about 20%. There is quite a bit more low end, not excessive, but just right for me, without any loss of mids or highs. There is also no noticeable speaker distortion, they stay clear even at levels well above I would ever use.

Really great speakers, and worth the money. In my opinion just replacing 4 speakers made hardly any difference, but swapping all 8 is like a whole new cab to play with.

They aren't exact matches, but they're not hurting for tone, either. Still, for me, the winner in the tone wars for me has been those CTS's.

Haven't heard the B810's yet, though. Maybe one day someone will give me an unloaded 810e just to get rid of it ;) Glad it worked out for you, Sam!

Sorry to hijack the topic but I don't think my question is worth a new topic...
I'm craving for an 8x10". Not that I need that much volume but IMHO more speaker area makes the sound just better. Anyway, I have two choices: build a sealed 8x10" with Eminence B810 or buy an ex-demo Ashdown ABM 810.
The woofers would cost about €100-150 less than the cab, but adding tweeter and all the parts/plywood/work would make the same amount. I never tried that ABM and never had a chance to see the Eminenge B810 in action... anyone here can comment and recommend a choice? The cab would be stuck in my place, don't think I'd carry it around but the Eminence stuff would probably allow me to make it lighter, I guess about 45kg VS 70... :hiding:

Is the cab lighter after you replaced the speakers?
