8x10 decision

Hello everyone, was hoping to get some info about 8x10 cabinets. I blew my 4x10, since I'll be getting something new I figured an 8x10 would be nice.
Does anyone have suggestions? Any certain brands or models that are good quality with a reasonable price? I was thinking about sticking with ampeg, but if not, what other options would be best?
My setup is a rackmount ampeg b2-re, which is 450 watts, along with the bbe 482i sonic maximizer.
Most of the cabinets I looked up were 1000 or 1200 watts. What would be the best way to power the 8x10? I thought about just getting a power amp and running that into the back of the b2-re. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Ampeg is definitely a good choice.
I have been hearing some great things about Basson 8x10 cabs.
You might wanna check them out!
They are slightly bigger and heavier than the ampegs but they have great frequency response for low notes.

basson amps are ridiculously heavy, so unless you've got a good trailer and/or roadies, look into Ampegs. Industry standard for a reason.

basson bass cabs also need 1500w to work and not overheat the speakers with the giant magnets.

anyway, other than the basson, forget power ratings. there is no such thing as "underpowering your cab," so your b2re is fine until you decide you want to upgrade for a legit reason. but basson is one major exception to the underpowering thing. because of the giant speaker magnets, it takes a lot of power to get them even to work, and they will burn up if you don't use the minimum power amp requirements basson recommends.

hey raiden the b2re works really well with the ampeg 8x10.
forget the power numbers... i played the b2re many times with svt 8x10 in rehearsals.never missed a single watt.
all i can remember is the drummer and the guitarist complaining that i am too loud.
if you gonna miss power with this combination you are deaf my friend

as for the basson i didn't play on it so you'll have to hear what other members have to say.

the new acoustic 8x10's arent the best, but definitely not the worst sounding cab ive heard. plus not a bad deal for the money

Just get the ampeg and be done with it. They are a great design and can be found cheap.

I'm not sure if you are committed to an 810 cab, but I find 2 x 410s more versatile for different venues, style of music etc. I'm very happy with my 410xl Hartke cabs; Give them a try. They are pretty cheap second hand. Good luck.

You might want to think about a couple of high power 2x10 cabs stacked vertically. Better on-stage sound and better dispersion FOH. Easy to transport. Small stage foot print. Even better, get a couple of 2x12 cabs stacked vertically.

LDS could put something together for you in any style you like.

I'm currently running a Carvin 8x10 that I'm very happy with. Sounds great and will handle plenty. Made in the USA and they are currently on sale for $499 at www.carvin.com. Definitely worth consideration IMO.

GK makes a really good 8x10 cab that's not very expensive too, sounds like a monster it's the Goldline series.

Check out the new Hartke Hydrive line. It's a resonably priced 810 that is lighter that most standard 810's. When paired with the new Hartke LH1000 head, you get a kickass LOUD stack for under $1500.

Or, other cabs in this league are Mesa's PH 610, SWR's Goliath Sr, or Megoliath - all of these will get the job done well for big cabs...

Very very true. I've always wanted to just unload on a Megoliath. Those things just look uber-formidable.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Ill probably end up getting a cab that is 1200w or so. Right now my rackmount ampeg is only 450w, what would be a good power amp to pair with that? Or would it be better to get one powerful head? Thanks

I never played a 8x10, but I like Peavey cabinets so I though I would drop the suggestion. I don't think you can really underpower your cabinet.
