Alright, from my understanding the most common preference is a 4x10 cab with a 1x15 to accompany it.

That's because marketing people have convinced a lot of gullible people that you need a 15" speaker for bass and 10" speakers for mids. You can't make an informed decision based on speaker size. If you want to know what they sound like you actually have to hear them.

I used to have strong opinions about this, but now I know I can get a good sound and enjoy playing through either given a quality product. The classic 810 is a sealed cabinet without a lot of low bass, but a 215 would (most likely) be ported and (most likely) have significantly more low-low. Obviously there are exceptions.

Depends on the cab. Every thing being equal (almost never is) the 810 will move a good bit more air. Being an old fart, who is not into ear bursting loud, a 215 would do me fine. They are often smaller and lighter as well.

Your math is way off on the 8x10.
8x10 = 628 square inches, 2x15 = 350 square inches

But don't forget, we don't live in a 2 dimensional world! Speakers vibrate in the 3rd dimension; this is called "excursion." A speaker with high excursion is capable of moving more air compared to the same size speaker with low excursion.

Oops, I calculated an 8x8 .....oh well. My apologies for the bonehead math.

I’ll take my 2 Greenboy Bassic 1x15 with Faitals over any 8x10. More efficient (aka louder) than an Ampeg 8x10 with better (to my ears, aka opinion) midrange, smoother top end, about the same in the low end, lighter and easier to move around, and more versatile in terms of wanting/needing either a big or small rig for any given gig.

Also the price tag is significantly more on the Bassics than many 8x10s...probably the main downside.

Most common preference? I don't think that's true. I think there are many more who would choose just the 4x10 and call it a day. I've always been a fan of 2x15s, but any preference has a lot to do with type of speaker and cabinet design, as well.

would go 810 because to me 10s just sound best. I have a 15 which I am not a huge fan of although it does it's job fine I suppose

If it's only 2x15 or 810 I'll take 810. I played a 2x15 rig for a number of years and I've never owned an 810 but have played them as part of a supplied backline. 2x15 is good but an 810 has that extra something. I also like the response of 10's better than 15's.

I think 10s are just punchier IME. I feel the initial thump of my attack the way I want to with an 810 that 15s just never do it for me

I played a 2x15 cab for awhile and didn't like it. Switched to a 4x10xl type for extended bass and it worked out much better for me.

An 8x10 is massive so if I actually felt I needed that much speaker myself I'd own two 4x10 cabs for versatility.

Given a choice my ultimate favorite would most likely be a really good top shelf 2x12 cab but that choice was not in the poll.

I'm going to say 2X15 for the pure sake of simplicity and probably maneuverability. You have 2 drivers to deal with instead of 8.
I would make the analogy that the 2X15 is like the P bass of cabs. Simple, big tone, just a good round bass tone.
