8x15 Can't Wait

Wasn't the Marshall 4x15 made of MDF?
Whiel MDf may be great for studio monitors because it doesnt resonate like ply or plain ole wood, my experience with MDf and particel board is that it doesnt road well unless it has a super tough exterior like lineX or melamine with metal edge protectors all around the perimeter. Liek on the old Peavey road series or Mesa Roadready.

It would look cool. That's reason enough right there. Hey, I use small rigs too, but sorry, bigass rigs will always be cool. They don't have to be running full out, and really, they don't have to be running at all for me to like them. I totally like looking at a wall of nice gear at a rock concert. And whenever someone dumps on the big rigs, I wonder if Van Halen would have had the same effect on a crowd if Eddie would have played through a Fender Champ and Mikey only used a DI. And then I think the people who dumped on the big rigs just moved 2 points closer to nerd-dom.
Always glad to see Van Halen's name on a forum. And big bass rigs on stage why not?

I get the feeling most talkbassers play small stages where a huge rig causes problems for the front of house sounds. Yet the big rig is nearly universally lusted after. Guilty as charged! But only for playing outside without PA.

The mega sized stadium rig is a joke played on us by sponsoring manufacturers. Only one or two cabs are plugged in. The rest to look impressive to punters and kid mere mortal players they need a wall of speakers like their idols.

I saw Boston at the Alamodome in San Antonio, had to be about 15 years ago. Don't remember it being that out of balance. Actually was one of the better sounding arena shows I'd been to. Our seats were close enough in to see pretty well but pretty far off sideways to the stage. Maybe in a different spot, it was more that way, don't know.

Interesting about Boston.

I'm a massive fan of Boston. 2 phenominal albums, one very good fun album, and then unfortunately a bunch of "meh".

I saw them a few times in various venues. I've seen them sound great and also where the sound was pretty lousy (Brendan Byrne arena)

One thing with Boston is that the vocals, backups etc are such a crucial part of the music that they NEED to be on top. Also, the multitude of guitars running through Rockman's (Rockmen?) have a super mid-forward tone which I'd guess doesnt play well with the vocals in a busy mix.

I can see where TS would want to make sure Brad and gang sounded clean.

RIP Brad Delp.

I find this weird and funny, in an exciting way.
In the 80's I played an outdoor gig for a large club and they had a couple of the Peavey 4x15 cabs they use to use in the club. So the manager thought it would be cool to stack them on the stage and have me use them. I was up for trying it, so I hooked up my GK 800RB and did the show. The lowend was massive, high end was weak, but overall the tone and sound just swallowed you, it was a very cool feeling. I know the Peavey's were designed as sub woofs so I'm sure a full range box would work. The only thing close to that was Michael Anthony's 18" and 12" setup I got to hear on the stage of a VH show I worked local crew for.
I think we'd all love that big sound, I'd just hate to move it.

first off, darn you for quoting me before I could correct my spelling!

:D

Second, your ply cabs may have great bracing, but plywood resonates more than MDF. At least that is the reason we are fed for why they use MDF in speaker cabinets that cost thousands.

OK, but properly braced they have such a high resonance frequency that its inaudible to us... and more importantly there's very little energy loss, unlike a big unbraced wheezing cab with no bracing and large unbraced distance between cab walls.

I remember when I was little my dad took me to a DIO concert and one of the roadies was tearing down a wall of Marshall cabs and he accidentally turned it around and it was hallo. funny stuff! Thats a true story
