9+ weeks for a Carvin?

As a public forum we're all welcome to express our opinions. And when you post this what seems to me like a flame to carvin, don't feel surprised when we question your motives. I just don't really understand your situation I guess.

If you read the thread - you wouldn't think it's a flame - my point isn't that confusing.

Why do you have to order new and not pick up some used six string carvin online? Why carvin? . . . .

Fair questions. Because I wanted to try a lefty 6 string with the wood combos of my choice in the least expensive way possible. Carvin is by far the cheapest way to accomplish that. That's a compliment in case it's not registering.

The resale price really has nothing to do with the quality or what a bass can do.

The re-sale price is very much the market's perception of the instrument's quality. Again - it's not about what I think - it's the market.

FWIW - I'm finding my used Pedulla PentaBuzz isn't going to fetch as much as I think it's worth either. But even then I'm not going to take even CLOSE to the beating I have taken on both of my Carvins.

But ultimately the point of ALL of this - is really ONLY about getting the run around on the phone from Carvin.

If they told me when I called the first time that they ran into some issues and want to make sure I have the best bass they can make but it'll take another 3 weeks - this thread doesn't exist.

Like West Coast Bass said - customer service is customer service.

It's not even that HARD - it's just takes 1 person that gives a ****.

You missed my point. Customer service is customer service no matter what the service is.

I agree, CS is CS, but it DOES matter what the service is, because expectations for reasonable performance are different. If I stay home from work to meet the cable guy and he doesn't show, he's just screwed up; he's failed to perform as promised.

If a bass maker says, I estimate it'll be done in 6 weeks, and it isn't exactly, he HASN'T necessarily screwed up, because a level of imprecision is inherent in estimating the completion time of a customized instrument. And he HASN'T failed to perform as promised ... because he didn't promise delivery at an exact time. Where he does screw up is if he doesn't communicate clearly with the client. If you're saying that's where the CS issue is, not in whether the bass was done exactly in 6 weeks or not, then I agree.

Just curious, when you say "beating," are you thinking in absolute terms or in percentage terms? I ask just because I think in a way it can make more sense to think of it in the former terms. Example: I actually take a worse bath on a $3000 bass that I sell for $2000 than I do on a $1200 bass I sell for $400, even though with the first I'm getting 67% of the original price and with the second only 33%. One way I'm out $1000, the other I'm out only $800.;)

Some of you guys are reacting emotionally to my statement that it's "only a carvin". I think you need to chill.

As I said earlier, I hope everything turns out well for you. I also understand that getting the run around when you want a staight answer is annoying. I also understand your point about bad Carvin resale value. I love Peaveys, they have the same problem even though their basses tend to be either good or great.

That said, you went out of your way to put down Carvin on several posts. Whether you meant or not, you came off like a snob. As I'm sure you know, players love their instruments and often feel loyal to their brand. Gratuitous putdowns just insult folks who may have had to bust their butts just to get a
"f'n Carvin."

You're a grown man, I can't tell you how to write, I'm just sharing how your post looked to me.

I'm going to agree with Jeff on the issue with him getting the run around from customer service. I'm also going to say I feel for him being a lefty as well.

I understand him not wanting to pay alot for a 6 string when he's not sure if he really wants a 6 (the whole lefty issue, again)...

That's all i'm going to say, i'm on my way to Birdland on 44th Street.. :smug:

Look - If I can somehow manage to avoid mistaking my personal identity with the MTD and Pedulla basses I play - I expect no less from people who play F'N carvins.

Kdding. :D

I see your point Dr. Cheese. My intention was not to slam PEOPLE for the kind of bass they play - only the snobbish attitude I've gotten from the folks at carvin.

You wouldn't happen to work in the PUBLIC sector would you? ;)

Thanks for the tip on marco.

I think you misunderstood me. I ordered the bass with the full intention of keeping it - 9 1/2 weeks ago.

But now after 10 days of getting dicked around on the phone about the "status" of my instrument from Carvin - I've come to the conclusion that I don't like the way the people at Carvin treat customers.

So - it's Carvin whose "conscious" should be under scrutiny.
edited, never mind.

First, let me tell you that I think that Carvin makes the finest feeling 6 string basses. I could have bought anything I wanted... in my single days. And I bought two LB76. One of which I spent almost as much upgrading pickups and electronics, as the bass cost originally.

Secondly, I had the same problem ordering my first Carvin, in reguards to resale. I had a bassist friend of mine in college who was many many years older than I. He asked me 'are you buying this bass to resell it, or to enjoy it?' And that meant a lot to me. Especially since I love that bass, and still have it!

If I were you I would either talk to somebody else, preferrably a manager. Or I would call every hour on the hour telling them that they need to hunt down my bass and email me pics.

Carvin did change over to commissioned sales. Many good reps that I knew left (Some of them are on this forum quite often). I think that may have something to do with this new attitude.

Yeah, try to get in touch with Marco (if he's still there, I hear there's been a lot of shakeup and turnover at Carvin lately). A little over a year ago, I had a bass kit on order, and while I was attempting to track its progress and whatnot, I was getting odd conflicting information. I emailed and Marco replied that he'd look into it and get things sorted. About a week later, my kit arrived.

I disagree with this statement. Supply and demand is the reason why certain basses fetch more money than others do in resale. It is not a representation of how well a bass is made.

As someone mention earlier, some Peaveys are fine basses, but there are so many of them...it's not good for the resale. This doesn't take away from how good the bass is, though. EBMM Stingrays can be had for 5-600 bucks used on Ebay. Original cost at GC is around $11-1200..not including tax and a case. That's close to 40-45% off. They are GREAT basses, but there are just so many of them out there.

On the other hand, Alembics and Wals fetch multiple thousands becuase they are in limited supply.

Alright man, Good luck with your hunt for a six string. We have our values in different places I guess.

These comments are approaching crude. I hope you treat other musicians you play with better than this. Cheers.

yeah I agree. He sounds like a pretentious pompus a$$. Maybe thats why he's getting such poor customer service.

Hope someone cuts you down a few pegs man. You've got alot of attitude and need to be humbled.
