92 peavy mark vi

Got gifted a semi functional peavy mark vi. I'm a guitar player who has built a few amps, question regardinging speaker connections. I am lost.

So the amp says the jacks are parrellled and it can output to 4 or 2 ohm at differing wattages.
Can I connect a single small 4 ohm speaker to a single jack for testing purposes and not hurt the ot? Obviously the 2 ohm thing is when 2 cabs at 4 ohms are connected which I prolly won't do.

Amp manual attached for reference. I'm prolly overthinking all this, my 68 Marshall jtm50 clone took about 3 years to proto and build, and thus forces me to overthink everything.

It's a solid state amp, so it won't have an output transformer. And those particular amps were pretty much bulletproof -- you can do almost anything you want with the output.

If that's a guitar cab then turn the Peavey's bass shelving right down and dip the first two or three sliders to avoid speaker destruction.

You can run it with no speaker load attached, or with a 16 ohm guitar cab, or whatever floats your boat, just don't go under 2 ohms and use common sense.

Yes, or two 8 ohm cabs. A 4 ohm load on that amp is generally in the middle of its output range and should let it run at a fairly high volume setting without getting too close to max temp / thermal shutdown. That would be if it's in overall good health.

Yes, with a max output around 60-70 watts into 16 ohms, but as mentioned, go light on the low frequencies or risk damage to the Marshal if it's a guitar cab.

Edit: what of the amp is "semi-functional"? Did it fry any speakers belonging to the person that gifted it to you? If it's damaged in a way that the speaker output is sending out something wild, like DC current, it could damage your speaker immediately.

Well, to be honest, I don't really know. I started tearing the amp down before actually connecting it, which was probably a mistake. My buddy said that the amp was in a shed that leak and it was exposed to pretty high levels of humidity. He also said that after connecting it and turning it on, he got a loud feedback or oscillation, and then shut it down . after opening the I noticed some white corrosion And the typical 30 years of dust and dead spiders. I cleaned the board as well as the pots and jacks getting into the power section everything looked fine and started to test OK. Can I run the amp unloaded and test the Rms output voltage at the speaker out to see if it's throwing some crazy voltage I have basically cleaned all the internal components reseated all the chip.

Thanks man. I was gonna say to all idk if bass guys are just chill or what, but my experience so far on this forum has been extremely helpful and pleasant. The tube amp forum I used to build my Marshall was like 90% getting berated for being a rookie and 10% percent helpful info.

As far as diy, that's an understatement. I have a background in electronics since I was a kid, I do construction and also computer programming and cnc/3d printing. I build a 68 Marshall clone from scratch (not a kit) and am like a proud dad. I've always wanted to play bass but also always wanted to play guitar cuz I'm a totally glory whor*.

I've built a few cabs for guitar amps and car subs that's not a problem. My issue currently is the price of bass amp speaker. I have a 2x12 peavy cab that actually matches the mark 6 tolex , but the speakers are pricey.

The last Peavey 2-15 cab I sold went for $125, and I'd have gone lower. Plus the guy had to carry it up the stairs from the basement. By himself.

The old heavy Peavey gear is out there. Usually going cheap.

I have that amp plugged in right now and I'd say that on top of being versatile with output loads, it's a versatile and dependable amp.
