A costly night... GK went boom!

...It's so frustrating to have gear go down because it's expensive. So trying to figure out if I cut my losses and move on. Have no idea what the cost for repair is going to be.

GK gear is great sounding, reliable gear. I've seen guys still playing their RB800 after 30 years and it's still going strong. Failures happen with any brand and I wouldn't give up on GK because of this, if you like the gear. I would start by getting an estimate for the repairs and decide from there.

Did you call GK? Do you live in a place where you can't get an estimate? If so peek inside (after unplugged for a while and don't touch stuff - capacitors can hold a charge for a while) and see if you see several components look cooked. If so, you've got your answer. I had an Ampeg several years ago that looked a bit like a campfire site . Otherwise it may pay to have someone look at it even if just to repair and sell.

Never once did I want this to be a bash GK thread. Just a what would you do with some blown up gear. I have a mb500 and a small backline 110 that I really like for practice.

Just frustrated and admittedly having never found sound utopia with this rig I am reluctant to get it fixed when I can use those $$$ on something else.

So was seeing if I was was justifying my own feelings or if others have experienced blown up gear and what they did. I have been lucky. I bought a bass amp for my high school rock band. Played clubs from California to Washington for years. I am now in my 40's and decided to get a new rig and haven't had much luck with this particular rig. Both in longevity and tone. No one has ever come up to me and said damn your bass sound is dialed. And funny enough I used to get that when I played a Megabass into a biamped 1516 cab. Who would have thought after reading these forums.

Seriously, I was a HUGE fan of the Megabass with 1516 or 1820 cabs. Wish I still had my 1516.
