A defretted bass into an unlined fretless

I may be getting a bass similar to this in the near future.

My plan is to defret it and turn it into an unlined fretless. I know I can use a dye like Invalid Link Removed, but would it work on the veneer strips and inlays?

Is there a certain veneer strip I should use? I know there are black stained ones available, but are they stained through? If I cut and sand them, would I not sand the stain off?

For the inlays, can I remove them and fill the hole with wood filler and then stain that?

And after all that is done, would Birchwood Casey's Tru Oil be a good finish to put on top of it all?

Thank you in advance,

Matt
