A first 6 string bass

There is a bass from Ibanez that hasn't been mentioned.

You should check out the BTB line from Ibanez. I'm the owner of a BTB 676, an absolutely amazing bass (bought for around 800 CAN $). Well built, good looks, average electronics however (I'll change the pick-ups eventually). The BTB 776 looks mighty fine as well.

Yes. I had the chance to play a BYB 5 a year or two ago. Very nice indeed. Think it had those Korean Bart electronics that seem to end up in everybody's basses.

I myself do not care for the newer Sr506 line. There was something just not right about the tone of them to me when I was playing them in the store. It didn't sound as good as other Sr models that had identical wood, pups and electronics. I also thought the tone of the older Sr506 line was slightly better when the body was made of IIRC Mapel and with the 2 band eq's. If you can find a used one that you can play I suggest trying it out. They're pretty solid basses and a used one can be had for $350 or less USD.

A couple of other fairly decent 6ers you may or may not want to condsider linked below for you.

Don't just order an Ibanez (or any asian made bass) without playing it.
Its been my experience that most show up with lousy fret work.
Sometimes they show up with a doomed neck from the factory.
Another common problem is improper sanding before fretting. This makes for wonderful buzz that cant be fixed very easily.
I am speaking from personal experience. Just make sure you can play it or dont mind paying return shipping if needed.

I second the "play it before you but it" whole-heartedly - if possible. However, I find this type of generalization somewhat offensive. I have owned two US-made basses with "doomed necks." Everybody can make junk that slips through QC.

I’ll cast another vote for going with a used instrument as your first sixer. Let someone else take the depreciation hit for you. I’ll also second the recommendation on an Ibanez. My first and only sixer was a pre-owned SR406. Great bass, but I eventually retreated back to 4- and 5-string instruments, so it was a highly cost-effective experiment for me.

I myself would go for an ESP D-6... They play wonderfully; I haven't seen too many ESPs that didn't play well. In fact, none that I ever remember playing. My D-5 is excellent: Articulate highs, endless lows, and the active pups are great (not to mention that they have a very good batter life). Just my opinion. :bassist:

Trying to convince the old one (dad) to take me to Quebec city this weekend and if it doesn't works my mom as buisness trips in moncton in about a week to.

Atm im either waiting (if i can control the g.a.s.) or ordering a scheter stilleto studio 6, that one kinda caught my eye
