Just ordered my first set of 40-100 from bassstringsonline (shameless shout out). I'm pretty stoked. I'm planning on getting my jazz bass set up with the light gauge strings and sticking the set of 45-105s I bought on to old reliable (my p-bass). What has everyone's experience of dropping a gauge been?

depends on the core...

when using strings with "smaller" hex core, I like gauges what D'Addario refers to regular light top/medium bottom 45-65-85-105-135 but customized in the middle so they became 45-60-80-105-135 (to give better balanced tension). When using strings with "normal" hex core, I used to be okay with 45-105 with 130 or 135 low-B, but this last year I prefer a gauge down to 40-100 with 125 or 130 low-B, which also customized in the middle to 40-55-75-100-130 or somewhat near these (GHS Pressurewpund 40-54-76-96-128 and Ken Smith Compressors 40-58-76-96-125).

Next I'm going to try round core, cause I'm having difficulty customizing smaller hex core due to their availability. I think I'm going to use the smaller hex core formula of 45-135 with the round core.
