A Gene Simmons question... huh ???

OK, something new ! Haven't seen a lot (if any) Gene questions here, so I didn't even bother to search.

The guys and I are probably going to cover "I was made for loving you (doo doo doo doo, whatever....) and I must admit, Gene came up with an infectious bassline (provided he actually came up with it and played it, of course).

Question: Is it me or is there some kind of effect in there... delay ? Reverb ? Blend of both ? Or I am fooled by the sequencer ?

I caught kiss live at Wembley Arena a few months ago - Gene did have a pretty distorted tone, and on his 'solo' there was so much delay that im not totally sure if some of it wasnt pre-recorded bass loops - it wasnt any sort of musical solo, it seemed pretty much just gene getting noisy whilst her gets hoisted into the rafters spitting blood.

I'm not a kiss fan by any stretch of the imagination, but they put on a hell of an entertaining show

I'm pretty sure Paul Stanley wrote and even played the bass part to "I Was Made For Lovin' You". I know he would from time to time, ie "Love Gun", and many times they are really creative basslines. A lot of times they would record at different times and both would do guitars and bass on their own tracks. Gene played guitars on his solo album cause he wanted a different take on the tracks from his own style.

was it really Gene & the boys, or just some guys who stayed at Holiday Inn Express?

I got those b*tches up close - no amount of make up could hide that many wrinkles. Real Deal, although TBH they might as well have phoned it in for the amount of scripted dialog that was going on, not that I blame them really, I mean how much is there to say other than:

'Heyyyyyyyyyyyy, its great to be back here in {insert city name}, we were just in [insert another rival city name]....'
*cue audience boos*
'....and they werent half as loud as you'
*cue audience applause, then cue a song about sex/rock and roll [delete as appropriate]*

The cheese was flowing that night -especially the video screen montage of musical greats (beatles, led zep, janis joplin) whilst they were singing 'god gave rock and roll to you'

+1 I was just thinking "that bass line sounds like a studio guy" - though I realize they still play that song live sometimes

Just Youtube it live for kicks. His performances on the tune are uneven, at best. Saw one (late 90's, me thinks) where he plays the line in a sort of staccato.... absolutely awful. But he's still my favorite, actually started thinking bass was a cool rock instrument after hearing the Hard Luck Woman bassline, for God knows what reason.

And is public persona... deliciously obnoxious.

;)

I just youtubed the song out of curiosity, never really checked that bassline before and i am an old school kiss fan. Saw a few people doing play alongs and it is a pretty cool
70's type of disco bassline using octaves and some 4th's(i think). After the drum break the order of instuments would be: Guitar, bass, then guitar solo. thats where you can really hear the bassline.

Gene does not use effects, he doesn't like them. He does not use backing tracks live.

The only songs he did not play bass on from the beginning to 1979 were Parasite, Love Gun, his solo album (he said it would have been too easy to just play bass), and IWMFLY. Obviously it wasn't because he could not play them, but because Parasite was written completely by Ace so he requested to play bass on it, and Love GUn was already written(including the bassline) when Paul brought it to the band, and IWMFLY was alaso written by Paul.

Here's the isolated IWMFLY bass from their new greatest hits ablum. This was played by Gene.
