A good SS Amp suggestion.

Gallien Krueger RB series head of your choice.
Nailed it!!

Used GK 400RB or 800RB

Either one, both amazing amps!! The 400 usually sells for cheaper, got mine for $125 and plenty loud for 200 watts!!:)

I'd keep an open mind about class D amps though too, that new Genzler amp sounds pretty amazing and same with the mesa subway

Better than G-K by WHO's measuring stick. You best be able to PROVE this.

well, true, I should have added a IMHO and humbly do so now.....
the Traynor is IMHO a great amp, that to me sounded fuller and more powerful when I compared it at the store, the GK seemed thin.......I have jammed dozens of times with it, 2 gits and a heavy handed drummer and it is plenty powerful enough to keep up and more..
in Canada right now is about $100 cheaper (partially because it is made in Canada, another nice plus for those wanting to buy N American)..the company has a great reputation for customer service and 50+ years of manufacturing guitar/bass amps, cabs and PA's: Traynor & Yorkville line......it doesn't have any hiss to it (that I have heard from others here about the GK)....mute button, 1/4"/speakon jack, tuner out, dead silent cooling fan, same size and 1/2 lb lighter than the GK

so for me, and possibly others, it is a better choice

I have to ask; If you are so fond of the Traynor (and I do happen to think they are pretty darn good), why displaying the Orange so proudly on your avatar?

There is a ton of used gear, old heavy lead sleds out there. Peavey gets you the best bang for your buck. Stuff runs forever. However, if you start looking at gear +35 years old, it will most likely need to be re-capped, solder joints inspected and redone, etc.

But nothing wrong with a well designed Class D amp. You have succumbed to musical mis-information. I didn't know Fox News reviewed amps.

A 1001RB is 22 lb, roughly the same as an Eden 405 or 550. Any of those is pretty well built. Heavy? Only if your groceries are.

Old Peavey - "meh" sound forever. Save 'em for after the Apocalypse. :D

Well I'll add to the "don't ignore class D amps" camp.

I'll admit I've never cared for the classifications of amps, I simply go with "sounds good," or "meh" when thinking about an amp for myself - which is why I had many years of enjoying a Marshall Valvestate 150 combo with my guitars, and making nice noises from it - contrary to popular "opinion". Valves are nice, but not essential to me, and class D amps are making great progress in recent months from what I've seen.

And on that note, especially if you don't want your amp distorting, I might well recommend the Mark Bass Nano 300 that I've had for a week now. I'm still making my mind up about it 100%, but it does what you're asking of an amp - 150W in 8ohm, 300W in 4 ohm, sounds nice and transparent and clean to me through a single Hartke 210XL cabinet. Certainly worth trying one anyway, and you'll join me as the only two people who seem to own one in the world!

Hi all!

I'm newby here.

I've been looking for a good solid state amp (head). For giging at pub's. I think starting at 200Watts.

I must say that I dont want anything of class D amps. I'm of the old school: discrete design power amp.

Used or New,.. either.
Chordelectronics spa2232 power amp paired with a good pre would be my first suggestion.
Not small but not all too heavy either and VERY good.:)
