It might not be as hard as you think. There is a bass only shop near me that specializes in boutique and high end basses, amps and cabs. You don't have to open a guitar center size place, and you could just find cheaper office space instead of more expensive retail space.

I was just at the GC in La Mesa an hour ago and like you mentioned, the only amps I found were Fender, Ampeg, GK, Markbass, and Acoustic. Not much of a selection.

It's amazing GC has approximately 200 basses in inventory and less than 30 amps and cabs at that location. I guess they sell more basses than amps.

At least strings were on sale.

That's about the last GC in town now, right? I remember when it was on C street, downtown (I think it's a homeless shelter now).

And those 200 basses? How many are under $1000 imports? Most of them, that's how many. Just beginner gear. You want to check out bass gear in San Diego? Bass San Diego up here in Mira Mesa.

Yes, I'm familiar with Bass San Diego.

They have nice stuff.

Its no secret, I love my Orange gear purchased via Zzounds. I will eventually upgrade to the AD200 head though.

A lot of the raging 100w guitar amp sound is the speakers being adequately driven, which requires a certain amount of volume. You can turn your amp down all you want using whatever method you want (less power, more attenuation, master volume, etc)... it's not going to produce "that sound" until you turn the actual volume back up and drive the speakers properly.

thanks for the info. I'll try this with my own tube amp. Everyone that has played this amp can't believe the tone even at low volume. The guy that made the amp made sure the tone doesn't become "thin".

But as you said, I am actually going to actually drive the speakers and see how this will affect the tone. I have been hesitant to make too much sound since I'm playing in a high riser but what the hell, I might as well see what my amp is capable of.
