A great article from Orange

A lot of the raging 100w guitar amp sound is the speakers being adequately driven, which requires a certain amount of volume. You can turn your amp down all you want using whatever method you want (less power, more attenuation, master volume, etc)... it's not going to produce "that sound" until you turn the actual volume back up and drive the speakers properly.
for some reason guitards never go for 25W and ONE 12'' until they grow up.
