A lot of the raging 100w guitar amp sound is the speakers being adequately driven, which requires a certain amount of volume. You can turn your amp down all you want using whatever method you want (less power, more attenuation, master volume, etc)... it's not going to produce "that sound" until you turn the actual volume back up and drive the speakers properly.

I have heard 12 watt guitar amps that were quite loud. that would probably be a good wattage and then just mic it for the rest.

I hear you. Only because I wore earplugs playing with 50w Marshall 412.

My wife's 100W 2x10 geetar combo is stinkin' loud and has great effects built in. If it could do bass at that volume and quality, we could all be popping eardrums for $400 and put the distortion pedal builders out of biz.
