A Guitar center "BASS OFF" ????

I guess it would seem a little silly to me, since (to me) the real merit of a bass player is not his pyrotechnics / shred capability, but his ability to make a whole band sound it's best.

That's what I really want to hear from a bassist, personally.

I'd love to see a bass off just to see exactly how it would work. What would we do? What would we play? I mean there are pros out there who sound just awful by themselves so what would us regular folks be expected to do?

As far as Guitar Center goes, I couldn't care less about their opinion of bass players.

I agree with most all of what is in the replies...

But... still think it sucks for young kids who love playing bass...
I guess they should be taught to be humble...and settle.

rewards for your talents only go to musicians who are not bassplayers?
I mean who would want to see the next Billy Sheehan junior at 15 play his or her heart out in a small music store setting anyway?

Maybe being a parent of a teenager with tremendous musical talent, this becomes a bit more of a sore subject to me than to many others.

I could care less about some show off contest for a free bass personally...
I already did the 80's band days and did my show off thing...:D

But, I know Kids would flip for the chance to do these contests GC puts on.
Show what they have to offer up and maybe win a bass or rig they cannot afford otherwise.
At the Drum off tonight, there was maybe 4-5 kids high school age.
Out of ten entries they allowed, two were over 25 I would say.

You know it's the truth, man! I can recall all of one time I've gone into guitar center and heard a bassist that was good by any means. And by "good" I mean not wailing on a bass like it killed their family. I can't see how the event would be cool for anyone besides the winner.

I'm a former guitar player turned bassist to help out our band, but have really fallen for the bass and respect all those who play it with passion, finesse, and conviction. That being said, if I was forced to sit in a room and listen to what I watch on YouTube as bass playing I'd stuff my pried-out eyes into my ears to save myself from the torture. One more slap video and I'm going to sue Larry Graham for all he's worth. No bass-offs needed. It'd be like a competition to see who the best center in football is. Now go hug your bass and be glad you don't play the drums!

I'm not always on board with Kwesi's comments but this one is about as rock solid as they get.

If it would be anything like when I'm trying to play something in the bass section through an amp and someone comes up and plugs in anything they can get their hands on to slap like mad and loudly comment to their friend about how undeserving some famous bassist is. "Can you believe they have a picture of that guy from Journey on the wall? So overrated."

A mass of bass players in the same space reminds me of comic book conventions. P-U!

Fork on plate slap happy freaks with tap-aholics galore with "speed is best" &55h07735 and music/bass Nazi BTers? No thanks. I can throw my new USA Spector down concrete steps and get better satisfaction.

Leave the ego for the guitarists and Mike Portnoy (since he has no real band).
