A guitar is a guitar!

Is a guitar a bass?

  • Absolutely not! A bass IS A BASS, by golly!

  • Maybe, but only if it's a Fender Bass VI.

  • Yes, a guitar is the same thing as a bass. It just burns up faster.

  • I don't know, they're all so pretty!

  • Carrots.

Seems like I'm seeing more threads on here on TALKBASS where the poster uses the term "guitar" while actually referring to a bass. This bothers me. I can deal with calling it a "bass guitar", but a guitar is a guitar...not a BASS.

So, is a guitar a bass?
I call them guitars so people outside of the community don’t mistake what I’m talking about for a URB or SUB or Orchestral Bass or whatever else you want to call it.

A guitar is a guitar a bass guitar is a bass guitar period !

^ This. When someone is playing a tenor sax, do you say that he is playing a TENOR? In the same way, that the big boy that our basses were designed to replace in popular music, the bass violin (actually, I think the correct term is contra-bass violin), is still in reality, a VIOLIN.

Now that said, let's not get our panties in a bunch over terminology. If you know what they are talking about, what does it matter?
Yes!
Vans are cars, so are trucks and SUV's.
Mmmmaybe..

Backwards bro. A guitar is in no way a bass. But, in all possible theories, metaphors, realities, and everything in between, a bass guitar is a guitar. Because we don't play bass bro. A bass is a low Cello. We play a guitar with big strings.
