A bass guitar is a member of the guitar familly- its a guitar, a bass guitar.
A double bass, upright, bull bass, string bass is member of the violin family - it's a violin, a bass violin.

I hope this clears this up for those who are unsure.

"Regular" guitar open string tuning is from E2 to E4 so, technically, it extends into the bass range.

Standard 4 string bass open string tuning is from E1 to G2.

Well. I think a gitar can be lots of things. You have Barritone guitars, tenor guitars. "regular" guitars and of course BASS guitars! It's just like with revolvers. They are a type of pistol, but hardly anyone refers to them as revolving pistols. Go figure.
The term bass is also not very precise if you want to get serious about it. You have the double (upright) bass, and of course there is also the bass as a deep male voice (singing). I would even be tempted to say that the term bass doesn't refer to an instrument at all, but the position in the musical notation system. The deepest/lowest sounding position that is.

Ummm, no. The double bass (or contrabass, or string bass, or acoustic bass, or doghouse, or upright) is not even a member of the violin family; much less is it a violin. It is a member of the viol family, and thus "bass viol" is one way of referring to it.

Try showing up to tryouts for a violin opening in an orchestra with a double bass and see how that goes.

Its a guitar, if it has guitar strings, scale (ish), tunings(ish). Its a bass if it has bass verions of the same stuff.

^ This. When someone is playing a tenor sax, do you say that he is playing a TENOR? In the same way, the big boy that our basses were designed to replace in popular music, the bass violin (actually, I think the correct term is contra-bass violin), is still in reality, a VIOLIN.

Now that said, let's not get our panties in a bunch over terminology. If you know what they are talking about, what does it matter?

I correct them since I don't play non-bass guitars and it's often in the context of "can you do something for me?" when I don't have that skill-set. Past that, I've stopped caring.

Yes, that is more specific. And since they had gut frets, and a shorter mensur simliar to an E-Bass, one might argue that we play an electric Gamba! (although the near impossibility of bowing the E-bass might give cause for pause)

Well, if we're being pedantic, that's actually a "double bass." Very hard to find a picture of a "bass", but a "bass" would be tuned the same as a "guitar" so, wait, OMG, this means that...

A poster calling a bass a "guitar" just means that she hasn't yet learned to use modern musician jargon yet, but it's still weird. I mean come on, everybody calls it a bass, right? I mean like everybody?

Also, I notice that "carrots" seems to have a good chance of actually winning this time.
