Well, you could always strike up a friendship with some lifer in the same prison. You know, to make sure he (the lifer) gets enought cigarettes, and commissary food, and stuff.

He'll probably end up not really enjoying his time based on his crime as has been said and oh darn for that. I sleep well knowing that John Gardner, the jerk who killed my neighbor Chelsea King, now sports a nice facial/neck zipper, named by the sheriffs for the zipper like scar that most child killers get branded with by their fellow roommates. Again, oh darn.
While I'm not sympathetic to the plight of people who abuse or kill children, I do find the sociology of prison justice a tad hypocritical, seeing as many people in prison are in no position to be moral authorities.

So basically, it looks like the DA's office didn't want to risk losing the case. If the DA's office went for first degree murder, which is what I think it looks like it mandated, the defense would have gone for trial by jury and plead not guilty because maybe there wasn't enough proof. Think Casey Anthony case. They could have tried to get first degree on the murder of the mother and third degree on the death of the baby. That would have been life (or death penalty) plus 20-40; and if they lost, they would have at least got 20 to 40 on the third degree.
So they went with third degree, it would be easier to win that case; and it worked as the defense came up with a plea agreement by pleading guilty.

what exactly does "life" mean? Certainly not "Parole".....How can anyone who kills ever get parole in the first place? I really don't understand this "Justice System"......when they say "life" it should mean "life" don't you think?
The justice system (it's become a joke to even call it that) infuriates me. Minor drug offenders rot in a cell while violent criminals get off FAR too lightly. That's not justice, it's politics. It makes me sick.

The most infuriating part was all the incorrect information in the original version of the article I posted. I see it's [finally] been updated. Dan Miller, the author, was in the court room I was not, and I had to email corrections to pennlive and to him on several key things. I wont even link the article that local news station CBS21 wrote (also in the court room) they still haven't got her last name right. the got torn apart on facebook for it tho.. some justice.

When word gets around on the inside what he did, he'll be taking a crap or a shower and then get shanked. Perps of violence against women and children don't get much respect from fellow inmates. Just think of not only the beatings and rapings he's going to have to endure, think of the PERMANENT paranoia he's going to have of it. knowing that it could happen at any point, by anyone. Even 5 years of that constant looking over his shoulder will take a serious toll on him mentally.
I know its only my personal opinion, but I'd rather see such an offender broken mentally and spritually than just physically. Not to sayy that a good solid boot party wouldn't be in order, because it definitely is, but to know that he's been mentally destroyed would give me more satisfaction. Physical wounds heal, but psychological ones stay.
All that being said, I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. I hope you can find peace with yourself and be able to celebrate her life without dwelling on the piece of nonhuman trash that would do such a thing to a pregnant woman. He doesn't deserve to be remembered, but SHE does.

Life means 20 years! I think it is BS...I have an old friend that got 3-30,,,ya you read that right, for selling a pill to snitch, only thing on his record was a few driving while suspended. Thats more time then a lot of murderers get!~
There are people in this country doing life for growing pot (not in Pa though), while murderers walk after a few years. The justice system is f'ed up. Prisons would rather warehouse stoners than violent offenders because they are easier to keep under control, so they lobby for tougher drug sentences and "compassion" and "rehabilitation" for violent offenders.
I don't know if I'd agree with that, at least in my area.
I'm more surprised that my area is so light on drunk driving. About once a week there's a 6th or 7th time drunk driver who is out on the road and busted yet again. Obviously the drunk didn't learn his lesson, but if he's out and still driving we obviously didn't learn the lesson, either.

A direct result of the f'ed up laws. If it was legal you wouldn't have armed gangs trafficking it. This is the same scenario that played out during prohibition. Is alcohol harmless? No. Did prohibition work? No. The only good that came from it was NASCAR.
Dwanie, I didn't mean for this to turn into a thread hijack, I was lamenting the fact that violent offenders are being turned loose early or sentenced lightly, and the reason often given is "overcrowding of prisons", which is due to some weird sentencing priorities of non violent offenders.
If it wasn't pot, criminals would find something else to sell and similarly guard. I kinda chuckle at the idea that these folks would simply beat their swords into plowshares. Either I've met too many criminals over the years or y'all simply try to give the wrong people the benefit of the doubt.
Prohibition and weed have entirely different logistics. Comparing them seems easy enough, but on a very deep level, it's just not the same. This is about the point where pro marijuana people start posting bogus "studies". I say this with a background in medicine, biostats, clinical experience, a BS detector, AND having read more medical journal studies than I would have wanted had it not been required reading.
Semi on topic, I'd appreciate a demonstration of a petty pot dealer getting life and a murder getting out in 10 years. Doesn't seem to happen in my area that we know of. Otherwise it just seams to be 3rd or 4th hand rumors.
