A Lousy Sonic Experience

Each note has a different wavelength so only certain notes would have had the right length of note to cancel each other. Move either amp forward or backward somewhat and you might have had different notes affected. It is also entirely possible that some notes were combining with each other and appearing louder. In saying that, the state itself could have been a factor as well.
This is true, but a hollow stage will also have resonate frequencies and can cause this effect. I'm not saying the OPs analysis isn't correct, I'm saying this could be an alternate explanation. And, it could be an exacerbating factor.

I don't disagree at all. When it comes to bottom end feedback and rumble through the mics I've had more problems with wooden stages than anything else.

These days, particularly with us using a Woodskin cajon with kick mic inside, I like nothing more than getting to a gig and finding a solid concrete floor. Even if the stage is wooden I can at least put the sub on the concrete floor (hopefully on the opposite side of the stage to the Woodskin) and minimise the chance of bottom end feedback.

I'd agree fully if it weren't for the fact that the problem disappeared when the guitar amp was moved to the side of the SVT, instead of right in front.
But the points about stage resonance are well-taken, and real. This particular stage seemed fairly flat-sounding (at least where the other instruments were concerned). The drums were tight, vocals in the monitors were clean, sax and lead were nicely balanced and smooth-sounding. The platform was elevated probably 4' above grade, standard gable roof with exposed trusses, and the sides were wide open.

Easily missed - I only alluded to it at the very end of my diatribe.

I warned the oncoming bass player that I strongly suspected amp/mic placement was killing the stage sound, and suggested that he have the guitar amp moved. He did, and as his band was playing, I got a high sign that all was well.
