A "Metal Fender" discussion

I was wondering when someone would be making a "Star Wars" reference.

In my ever so humble opinion, the star maker's are not the corporations, they are YOU. If no one watched American Idol, we wouldn't have Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson on the radio at all. The corporations pick them up because they know that they can sell them, and they'll sell them for as long as they can.

Kiss and Aerosmith were both down and out in the early 80s, and they made a comeback because there was still demand for them. Now compare "Lick It Up" to "Black Diamond." They may as well be a different band. Compare "Love In An Elevator" to "Mama Kin." Both bands, like all bands, eventually themselves turn into money making junkies. Gene Simmons is all capitalist, just like Sharon Osborne. Not that there's anything (at all!!) wrong with making money, but if ya don't like it, stop consuming it.

Thank god for illegal downloads... a person can get all the Mama Kin they want these days and not pay a dime to the artists formerly known as Aerosmith. Or to the parasites who take the other 90 cents.

Expanding on snake1066s post, while one can certainly find Fenders in metal, I think the general step away from Fender basses during the 80s parallels the movement then by guitarists away from modded Fender Strats first to custom and then production superstrat-style guitars made by Jackson, Kramer, Ibanez, etc. These established an anything-but-Fender standard for metal guitarists that Fender has really had a hard time overcoming.

Except for the new Jim Root strat, Fender's more or less given up on trying to compete in the superstrat market. Epic fail. You can probably name more Fender-playing metal bassists than Fender-playing metal guitarists, but all around, the iconic Fender scroll headstock has for historical reasons become un-metal (though the tele headstock is outre enough to be edgy). Anyhow, Fender really needs to become a Dethklok endorser . . .

I don't think it has much to do with tone, if anything. With the insane number of choices for J pups and electronics, you can make a Jazz sound however you like, and of course PJs have a lot of metal history. If P/J style pups are just not your thing, rout in some soapbars or Big Blocks ala Stroud.

Not exactly but there were some metalcore bands here that were mentioned/ everybody is listening to metalcore now.

I think you didn't quite read my post...

I never mention the term metalcore, in fact, I tend to hate most bands described with -core.

I even said that the improvement I was speaking about WAS NOT ABOUT TECHNIQUE (although nowadays people spend more time perfecting theirs, and that's completely positive).

If you're using the term close minded to describe me (since that was the impression I got) I think you're being somewhat hypocrite, since I am the one that's trying to çure people to the new stuff.

You can't be more close minded than not to listen to music just because it was released post 80's.

Despite this I agree with your last statment.

EDIT: And IMO I think Gojira's music has a lot more quality to it than Metallica's, not excluding the first albums. It uses structures that are a lot less primitive, repetitive and they actually are somewhat original.

I never said you were, i just said in general. These stupid metal arguments are ridiculous.

BTW metallica had a LOT of originality back in the day, they started a movement and were the top of their genre. After and justice they kinda of changed (black was OK) but lets face it the early stuff was prime and very original, i can't remember hearing anything like master of puppets, Call of ktulu or The four horsemen.

My view on metal is really changed. I got into it because i loved the music and i loved the old school scene when it was "we don't care". Now it seems so many metalheads are snobs/ trying to compete with you how metal they are...its freaking stupid.
