I've mentioned this before in this forum, but now I'm getting serious:
It seems to me that on a bass, the active electronics (preamp) doesn't really fit the dynamics of a bass. I believe that instead, the preamp should also include a compressor.
For a typical bass with two pickups, the control knobs are usually volume, blend, bass, treble, or some similar combination. I propose another alternative - Replace the preamp/tone with a dual band compressor. So the controls on the bass would now be: Volume, Blend, Threshold, and Ratio.
Now, for those who might freak out over the absence of Attack and Release time controls, I propose, on the circuit board, to add several jumpers that allow the player to set these. Also, since I am thinking of a dual band compressor, I would also add a couple jumpers to select crossover frequency.
So, basically what you would end up with is a bass with four control knobs: Volume, Blend, Threshold, Ratio, and inside the battery/circuit compartment, there would be jumpers to set attack/Release times, as well as crossover frequency.
