A nice single cab solution for my Thunderfunk

I first heard Pete Skjold's cabs at the Dallas Guitar show back in April. He had a three way 2x10 and a three way 1x15. I thought the 2x10 was alright, but the 1x15 was absolutely amazing. Well unfortunately Pete isn't going to be going through with the cab venture at this time so he decided to sell his protos. He made 2 1x15's, the 2x10 and a 2x12. As soon as I found out he was selling them I gave him a call.

I am in love with my Thunderfunk, but it wasn't meshing well with my 8ohm Bergie HT210s because it is fairly power hungry. This 1x15 is a 4 ohm cab with a 6 inch mid range speaker rated at around 600 watts. When I got it home last night, I briefly turned the volume up to 8 with the gain at 4 and couldn't believe how freaking loud it was with a crystal clear tone. No hint of breakup at that volume, simply amazing. Its a real shame that Pete can't sell these because they sound simply amazing. Tom Bowlus has the other 1x15 right now.

For my purposes, its truly a single cab solution.

Don Oatman at Low Down Sound is making very similar cabs using various stock and proprietary Eminence drivers. He has a very nice sounding version of the new, very nice Eminence Neo's and also prefers three way cabs. His cabs even look similar, with a blue baffle versus the maroon. Don also offers a great spray on finish if you want it versus the carpet.

I wouldn't have posted this here if Pete was still going to produce his cabs. But since he isn't, I have a feeling Don's three way cabs would sound quite similar.

For those looking for unique three way, small, light, reasonably priced cabs, the LDS stuff is great.

Here's picture of a two way two 15" cab and a 2x8, with mid and tweeter airhead three way as examples. Note that the blue baffle board is much more subtle when seen 'live'... the flash of a camera really makes it scream 'blue'... it's much more subtle in normal lighting.

Don certainly makes a great cab, and I am very impressed with the LDS cabs that I have owned/tried, but IME/IMHO, I would not expect his cabs to sound extremely similar. Different cab makers, using different tunings, different construction techniques, etc. are going to end up with different sounding cabs, even if they use the same drivers. It might be the same general ballpark, but so might a design from any number of other cab makers.

Well, the good news with the TF is that it sounds good through almost anything. I never use more than one cab with my TF, and have a number of 4ohm cabs (Ht210S, Schroeder1212L and 21012L and Epi410UL) all of which sound different but GREAT with that head.

I've only played an HT115 once in a music store setting... very nice, smooth, heavy(!), but 8ohms and not very efficient... IMO not the best match for the TF as a single cab.

+1... it would be hard to know. Don uses so many different designs and tunings that his cabs can sound very different from one another, much less from another manufacturer.

However, he's one of the only producers (I guess Accugroove and Flite are others) I know of that makes a three way 15, and I think the only one that can make a 4ohm version. It seems that he would be the best bet IMO if someone wants a small, 4ohm three way 15 now that Pete is no longer considering his design.
