A rant about the re-occurring theme here..

I'm at a point in my playing career where I feel qualified to offer opinions on instruments I've only tried, and / or were poorly setup. I can gauge if a bass can be setup and would play good from playing it with a poor setup, from my experience.

Having said that, there are a lot of very opinionated people on here, whose opinions wouldn't hold much weight with me.

Regardless, I value reading comments the people have about certain equipment, and often use that info to determine purchases of things I can't try in person.

But, finally, I do tend to not agree with many popular opinions about gear I already own. Take it all with a grain or 10 of salt and form your own opinions.

I'm glad I like what I like, and that's OK with me. Oh man, I knew I shouldn't listened to that guy. Too late now!

1) We don't "open our mouths" here. We type.

2) As for the title of your rant..... It really bugs me when somebody goes off on a group of people for not knowing what they are talking about and uses the term "re-occuring". Long ago somebody who did know what he was talking a out came up with the word "recurring", thereby forcing your version into extinction.

3) All opinions are welcome (even yours). Sure, you have to sift through some to get to what you really want. But they are all still welcome.

4) Just what, exactly, are you suggesting anyway? Should we ban everyone here from offering an opinion on anything they haven't owned? I have played (literally) a hundred provided back line gigs probably more). So I have done an entire show with dozens of kinds of rigs. Does that count?

there's a class offered at most universities in logic and debate, and one of the topics they cover is how when you can't poke holes in someone's points, you attack the person or tangential items..

Since #4 is however related to my post... I'm suggesting a bit of self discipline is all. But clearly that's not going to work here.

gear critics are like movie critics, imo. i like to watch any film that sounds exciting to me. if a love story gets an excellent review i would still rather see an action movie that the critics snubbed. people can hate my favorite bass and i have learned to forgive them.

So I'm supposed to spend (just for example) muti-thousand $'s on a bass and must reserve judgement for weeks/months (just how long exactly)? I say thats wrong. So who's right & who gets to decide who's right & are they qualified to say who's right & who decides if those qualifications are right, & so on. I do understand where your coming from though, just don't fully agree.

I used to hang on a guitar forum, and twice bought products that were supposed to be the best things out there, according to several members. In both cases, I thought they were among the worst I'd ever tried. You realize real quick that you may or may not agree with product opinions expressed on forums... kind of like when a guy comes around and says his Squier blows away any American Fender. You kind of have to think.... OK, and move on.

I never had the pleasure. I am a self-educated hole poker.

That being said, I still think that anyone who went to college and/or knows the definition of "tangential" (great word by the way) would also have caught wind of the word "recurring" (and, while we're picking nits, may have learned how to stick an "upper case" letter at the beginning of a sentence).

I'm just here to help in any way that I can.

I agree without that playing a non setup or poorly set up bass at GC isn't a good way to determine an opinion. I've played a well set up Pino that a friend owns. It felt great. It sounded great. Even though I don't own it, it's my opinion that it's overpriced by several thousand dollars. That's my opinion. That doesn't mean people shouldn't buy them. That doesn't mean they are over priced. It's simply my opinion that they are, even though I don't own one. Your assertion that the only opinions of a bass that are worth anything are from owners of said bass, is silly, in my opinion.

You liked my response before I edited and added the last sentence, fyi.
Before this thread gets locked because it's not about a bass and doesn't belong here, I want to clarify my position. Playing a poorly setup bass at gc isn't a good way to determine an opinion, but it doesn't compeltely invalidate the opinion. You can get a feel for a bass and determine whether you like it or not even if it's a sad and abused gc floor model.

Like belly buttons, everyone has an opinion.
That's not what I heard opinions are like.

Here's the thing. Any show you can play on your Custom Shop Jazz bass can be played equally well on a Squier Jazz bass. Everything else is pretty much just the individual player's satisfaction. The CS Geddy Lee and the CS Pino that keep getting mentioned...they are based on normal production basses. Is the original inferior to the replica? Maybe it is, but you can play the same shows with either. I might take my EB Stingray to a show...or I might take my SBMM SUB Stingray. I might take my MIM P bass, or I might take my MIA P bass. I play the same songs regardless. Some basses have better fit and finish, but musically, that really doesn't matter much.

I'm not sure why anyone would feel the need to defend their instrument choices, unless a part of them realizes that they could have gotten the same utility and enjoyment for a fraction of the price. If you are happy with your basses, go play them. It really doesn't matter if someone else likes your choices or not - unless you are married to them!

Yep. It is possible to pick up a bass in a music store and realize that the action is too high, that the neck needs adjusted, AND that you don't like the neck profile or other ergonomic factors of the bass. Any bass (that isn't defective) can be set up to play adequately. There is still a lot you can tell just be picking it up and wrapping your hands around it.

Yeah! And I literally hate they way people use the word "literally" now. Don't you hate that? It literally started less than a year ago, and it has since become a word that literally no longer has a meaning - it is literally used only for dramatic effect.

As I am typing this, the bartender literally said it for dramatic effect (I am not pooping you here. That is the truth, and it makes me want to scream.)

It's literally a thing. A thing is a thing. It shouldn't be a thing. Amirite? I can't even.

If someone is asking for opinions here on a bass hopefully they're prepared to sift through them. There's bound to be some relevant information, especially if the person asking has a properly filled out profile and is prepared to ask/answer additional questions.

I just feel like there are way too many threads comparing bass guitars or for that matter amps and other items where the people doing the comparison simply aren't qualified to render an opinion.

Where do I go to get my opinion qualified? I was under the impression that I was entitled to my opinion. And I thought freedom of speech gave me the right to voice that opinion.
