Play what you have with chicken grease on your hands. A couple weeks of that and they will sound fine and you will not have wasted money on strings.
I don't know about chicken grease
, but I do agree with part of that. Any old round string left on for a couple weeks will give you some happy medium between ZING and THUD. If your rig has any midrange game at all it works out to a nice sound that cuts without clank. And it allows me to live up to my namesake.The following were not bight enough for me, but may be just what you're looking for:

I've been using Smith NPS Bass Burners for quite a while. For me, they have the right amount of everything.

D'Addario Half-Rounds or SIT Semi-flats. The Half-rounds are not as bright as the semi-flats, but also last longer.
I have 2- sets you might have interest in trying... (both used) Ken Smith Compression-wound & D’Addario Half-round.
I JUST got these (on Monday) & think I need to get a thinner gauge... have about 3 mins. play time (Fender P... 3- wraps)
The Ken Smith are ‘same’ as GHS- I’m told. These are .044-.102 Compression wound (see package)
Heres a link to new ones: For Sale - 3- sets used strongs (mixed type)
Also have a set of D’Addario Half-rounds (were on same bass)- are .040-.095 (used maybe 2 hrs. total play time)

Just a couple of things to be pointed out for clarification...
Yes, the Ken Smith Compressors and the GHS Pressurewounds are closest cousins (alloy 52 rollerwound), if not identical twins, with a few differences.
First, the KS's "long scale" has a winding length (ball end to silk) of 38", while GHS PWs (universal long scale) are 37.25". This is why the KS E-string has part of the main body wrapped around the tuning post, as in the photo above.
The KS "44-102" set includes a 62-D, while the GHS "44-102" set (ML7200) has a 58-D. I find the 58-D a lot better balanced with the rest.
The silk on the GHS PWs are black, not purple like the KS.

GHS Boomers I have them on all of my basses I can make my '78 P do anything from Motown thump to Punk bite with just a simple turn of the tone knob.
