A second SVT 210 AV or a new cab?

Hey brains trust I have a question for SVTAV210 users. I currently run my tonehammer 350 through one of these cabs. Sounds great tone wise but it’s not quite loud enough for rehearsals and I don’t love the tone at full volume as others have noticed. If we gig we have a PA so it’ll just be for me on stage. I am torn between getting another cab to get a bit more oomph or getting one or two 112 cabs as I would like a change and maybe a bit more bottom end.
The reason I ask for info on the second 210 is that it will set me back $600 Aussie dollars.
Or I go down the 2x112 route, starting with one. An orange 112 is $790, GK neo is $1000 and a Mesa subway 112 is $1500. They are the cabs I am looking at new and can get here and now. Where I am the secondhand market sucks and I am happy to get new and spend the money as I play almost every day and love it so it’s a worthwhile investment for me. I just can’t decide if I “need” it. The definite need at the moment is a little more bass and volume than the 210 is giving me. thanks!

A second 210av will drastically improve the volume and tone, IMO. I used to have a pair of them and would sometimes take one to rehearsal with the same results as yourself. Not quite loud enough, and a little anemic sounding. Adding the second cab took care of that problem, giving me more volume and a fuller sound. If you like the sound of the cabs, add another one to it and stack them as a vertical 410.
Also, a slight bass boost helps these cabs a lot.

Sweet, thanks! Yes that was my original plan, when I bought the first one for home use, to run two stacked vertically. I guess I just wasn’t sure if it would get me enough over the line volume wise, I’ve only had combos until now. Anyway sounds like it will be enough, cheers.

That is good to hear, it’s just me, one guitarist and drummer and it’s definitely not crazy loud or mega distorted or anything so I think the second 210 will work perfectly, having one is so close to enough so the second should just make everything sweeter and I like the mini fridge look, plus it’s so easy to move haha.

If you like the sound and if it really only is for hearing yourself at medium to medium loud shows, go for it. If you are itching for a better bass response and want to be on the safe side volume wise, go another route. These cabs sound good in their own right and two will bring a big difference. But they won‘t replace a good 410 or 212 with a larger footprint.

Maybe another thing to consider: I do love them (heck I own four of them) but the wood is quite soft and two of them are from before Yamaha took over and fixed some QC issues so their tolex is coming way off!

And I really don‘t get why the feet still won‘t match the holes when putting them on top of another. These are just for the Micro VR which not too many players use for these cabs.

+1 On this. I run a vertical stack with 2 210av’s and for me, it’s amazing. I was happy with 1 210 for practice and stage volume, but I’m surprised with the volume increase with the vertical stack.

My 10” cabs get harsh when pushed hard too. I like the idea of more speakers, but just a couple of points to consider.

if you are running an 8 ohm cab, your amp is not pumping out 350 watts. Probably a good deal less. If you re running a 4 ohm cab, and want to add a second, you need to be aware of the minimum load your amp will handle and make sure your load is not lower than that minimum.

Next, Miss-matched cabs. Another thing you need to be aware of is different cabs can have different characteristics. Some are more efficient than others and this efficiency can effect different frequency ranges. Getting a homogeneous overall sound can be quite challenging without a stereo head or bi-amping.

Power rating can be different which can lead to situations like the higher rated cab being used inefficiently, and at the same time the lower rated one is getting too much power that you can’t hear it “farting”, the first sound that warns you are about to need new speakers.

Assuming your first AV210 is an 8 ohm cab, I’m thinking if you bought a second 8 ohm AV210 cab, they each would get half of the 350 watt output of your amp (175 watts each) which will remove that harsh sound you’ve been experiencing out of the one, but it should seem like you are twice as loud. Plus you will not have to deal with balance, minimum ohm, as well as efficiency issues.

Best wishes!

Awesome, thanks everyone for the replies!!! Looks like I'll add that second cab before the next jam Friday! Not only the cheapest and portable options but also they are both 8ohms (@dbsfgyd1 ) so will pair nicely with the TH350.

I do like the tone @johnpbass , always searching for a new sound too but for now, happy days.

Yes Aussie dollars suck @jeff7bass for some things! Bass amps and cabs seem to be the worst offender, plus stock issues and shipping.

Thanks for the heads up about QC @SteveFromBerlin, so far so good with the first one. Otherwise gaffa tape to the rescue haha. Also yes, those bloody cups in the top? so lame to only design it for the micro head.

If you could get a 112av cab, it blows away the 210av cab. In low end and volume. I've had both. Two 210av cabs, and the 112av. Also alot of others, but not important. Overall tone is very similar, except that it also has more high end as well.

Two of them really don't make that particular stack any better. They're too shallow. As you turn them up, they don't sound all that great. They get real honky in the mids, and don't put out much low end at all. Yes, even with two of them. The 112 blows that cab out of the water. And two of them, is actually much better than the one 212av cab.

Cool thanks @JeezyMcNuggles that is good info to mull over. As stated in the OP, I am toying with idea of moving to 2x112- for portability mostly as sometimes I jam with some old dudes around the kitchen table so hardly need any juice. Then for the rehearsals, house shows etc I can bring the 2x112 and smash it. Gigs are all good as we always get PA support here. Cheers

Most of the time I run one or two AV 112s with a PF 50 T , V4b , Demeter 400D or GK 400 RB . Sound great with whatever I throw at them .They are great cabs for the money .
Also have two 210 AV's . Vertical 4x10 is cool . The 210 AV's have steep low end roll off . Great for small venue stuff .

I ran the 2x210AV stack with a TH350 for a while and really enjoyed it, although I eventually found that combination a little dark and cloudy for my tastes, and switched back to a GK head with those cabs. Then again, that issue probably had more to do with the way I was setting up the eq and drive section than the actual limitations of the gear.

I would say that 1. Two SVT210AV cabs are more than the sum of their parts, and will give you more volume, perceived low end, and clarity than you'd expect from two little cabs. 2. As long as you like the tone of the rig you've got, you're just adding more of a good thing.

Two SVT210AV’s literally sounds twice as good as one. Much rounder as well as fuller tone. I was skeptical about the second also, but so glad to have two now. I run the pair with a TC electronic BH550. I really dig them. I also have a Genz Benz Neox212, but rarely use it.
