What an intense anecdote. Thanks for sharing. In high school in the mid 90's, there were only 2 bands & they had a revolving membership of any one of our little crowd of 20 or so kids, including my first girlfriend, Megan. Awesome person but she had a pretty troubled home life, both parents dead & living in a new state with a step-grandmother she barely knew. She committed suicide the summer before our senior year. I was gone with the family on a week's vacation and didn't find out until we got back. This was before cell phones were common. I even missed the funeral.
Now, 22 years later, I was digging through a box of old cassette tapes I pulled out of the closet. Found one of the band I was in. Gave it a listen, cringed at how bad it was. I remember listening to it in the past, it was the tape we always copied & handed out, but I had never noticed the extra song added to the end. After a minute or so of blank tape after our last song, there was Megan, strumming her acoustic and singing her last sing. I swear I had never heard it before. Never even knew about it.
I needed a moment after that. A long moment.
This song, living here on Lake Erie I have a respect for the Great Lakes and grew up with some guys who run the freighters.
Between the lyrics telling the chronologic story and the haunting solo, its gets me every time I hear it.
Another haunting one.
First song, she has the coolest singing voice.
