A squirrel yelled at me today

Anyone know why a squirrel would make loud noises at a person? I've never heard squirrel sounds before.

but seriously, we have all kinds of squirrels in our yard and the neighborhood in general (lots of trees) and they regularly bark and chatter at things, including me, all the time. Who knows why .. defensive noises ??

Just guessing but it is probably an alert to other squirrels in the area that a human is nearby.

I work in a lot of remote forest settings and can tell you squirrels are nature's little ***holes. I've had cones dropped on my head and been harassed when getting too close to their cone cash. It's actually pretty humorous.
FWIW... I've been told vocalizing in short bursts means "I'm here" and the longer machine gun like bursts mean "back off". In squirrel-speak of course...
