A squirrel yelled at me today

I think it’s so interesting how squirrels are such energetic, effortless climbers; agile, fearless acrobats; and quick, elusive runners that can accelerate, stop, and change directions in an eyeblink—sometimes seemingly in mid-air—yet nobody EVER feels complimented after being called a ‘squirrel’.

We've lots of squirrels in my back yard that backs up to woods. Never had a problem with them. Groundhogs can be vicious if cornered. Fox kits have tried to run in the front door. Deer, I worry about Lyme ticks. Coyotes are not generally scared or friendly; they're not around very often which is good. Chipmunks and squirrels are not a problem.

If you were close to their nest or a food source, that might do it. Don’t give him any food to calm him done because you’ll never be rid of him from that point on.

This made my morning.

My Dad (RIP, Love you Dad) was around 80 and he lived by himself in a really nice apartment complex. They had an outdoor area with trees, flowers and picnic tables.

My Father would buy bags of peanuts and feed the squirrels. They became very friendly around him, and would come running when he showed up. One day I went to visit him and saw that he had bandaids on his head. I asked him what happen and he said he was feeding the squirrels, everything was fine until he ran out of peanuts. The squirrels apparently weren't to happy about it as they circled around him and started barking at him. He tried to leave and one of the squirrels jumped on him and climbed to the top of his head.

He started running while beating himself in the head trying to get the squirrel off of him. I held it together the best I could but the thought of a 80 year old WWII Vetran running in circles while trying to remove a pissed off squirrel from the top of his head has never left me.

He never fed the squirrels again.

Anyone know why a squirrel would make loud noises at a person? I've never heard squirrel sounds before.

You were too close to something......

True Story: I was stationed in Guam for a tour and they have these VERY territorial Black Birds. During a certain time of year, they will attack anything close to their nest. Problem is each own a light post or a tree - all of them. So if you're out jogging, they'll start swooping down on you and making close abort passes at your head while making this hideous noise. Its a bit terrifying the first time. But it was hilarious to see the newcomers to the island freak out at the situation. The secret was really to keep moving. Don't stop, don't freak out, keep moving. Yeah, I know the bird from the next light post is coming out to greet you..... Keep moving. The funniest I ever seen was one young lady who brought her tennis racket just for this occasion. Not wise.... ya see if you stop, him and all his buddies will team up on you. She had about 5 of them on her in seconds.... guess what..... she kept moving - at a high rate of speed.

FWIW, three mornings ago, my wife and I witnessed two foxes fighting on our backyard patio. Baltimore City, unbeknownst to many, is teeming with wildlife, because of the numerous streams and rivers that run through the countless parks and stands of trees. It is not uncommon for me to chase five or six deer out of the yard from time to time (can’t stand them; they eat EVERYTHING). But two foxes throwing down was definitely a first.

Its young (or food stash) might have been nearby. Or you moved suddenly and it felt threatened. Or it was being territorial.

What's worse? A squirrel cheep-shouting at you or a Canada goose hissing at you? I'll take my chances with the squirrel over the goose. Those geese terrify me.

Not many row crops around and have mostly grey squirrels, but I one day I was out bowhunting and a Fox squirrel was dragging an ear of feed corn through the woods - stopping every ~10 feet to plant another kernel?... Have had them within a couple feet many times when in a tree-stand but never been attacked....

In our previous home we had a sliding glass door leading to a wooden deck. We put bowls of food on the deck near the door which attracted a lot of squirrels and birds. Our two cats would sit and watch from inside and try to get through the glass. After a while one of our cats started making chirping sounds when he saw a squirrel or bird. Don't know which one he was imitating as both squirrels and birds could make somewhat similar sounds.

Red squirrel species are small, red backed, white bellied, and bushy tailed. These squirrels are very territorial and will chatter and chirp to alert other squirrels of threats.

Fox squirrels are bigger and your more typical cliche squirrel in black, gray, tan, or mixes of many colors. They will bark but generally make less noise.

I love squirrels. They can be very chattery or screechy when they perceive a threat, but you can't really blame them: squirrels are extremely vulnerable creatures with a high mortality rate (a squirrel is lucky if it makes it past its first year of life).

I have a squirrel defeating bird feeder, (long plexiglass cylinder with break-away bird perches) it's a lot of fun seeing them fall off over and over. However the baby squirrels can defeat it in the Spring hanging from their hind feet, when they grow up, they fall off. This time of year they are all falling off.

happened to me once. I was hiking and sat down for for a minute. This squirrel starts shouting at me like a crazy old man saying “get off my lawn”. I mean , it didn’t say that , it just sounded like it. It kept shouting at me until I left.

There was this squirrel in the parking lot where I work who would recognize me because I gave him almonds one morning. So every day he'd wait for me cause he knew he was getting breakfast. I called him Nutzo. One morning I forgot the almonds and as he came up to me I said "Nutzo I'm SO sorry I forgot your breakfast. I'll remember tomorrow Nutzo I promise!" And I look up and this woman saw me talking to a squirrel. She just was stopped in her tracks looking at me & Nutzo. I panicked. Just blurted out the 1st thing that came to mind. I said, "It's ok! I know him!" I'm sure that put her mind at ease.
