A stage snake

I'm getting the band a new mixer and amps. We have unpowered subs and tops, and 2 15" 8ohm monitors. I'm going to get a 24 channel mixer, crossover, and 2 pa power amps, and an amp for the monitors. I also want to get a snake but I don't know what size. We use 14 inputs right now, and we'll have 4 monitors, 2 subs, and 2 mains. I'm thinking 16X4X50', but I don't know.

What @modulusman said.. go digital (and wireless)... much better functionality over analog.


I have 2 snakes (not counting my stage snakes).. 16x4x150 and 24x8x200. Haven't used them in 2 yrs.

Your channel count says you are going to need more than 4 outputs unless you are only sending out a single monitor output that gets split at the speakers and 2 main outputs that get crossed over at the amps.
I would get 2 snakes personally, a 16X100ft and an 8X100ft.
Even that would not leave you any room to grow as you but it would give you some flexibility and would also allow you to run cables to the most convenient places rather than where the amp rack has to be.
Unless you go to a digital stage box and mixer you will still need the snakes.

If that was the case, why aren't there lots of stage snakes up for sale on the TB Classifieds? I was able to find one, and it is way too big for our needs.

I bet... They are heavy as all get out There is a lot of copper cable in those things!

@Big Hoss - taking a guess, that looks like one of those cheap Seismic, OSP or Musician's Gear snakes. For that price, you get cheap cable, cheap connections, probably wired incorrectly, and so on... You get what you pay for. My advice - if you plan to buy one - is bite the bullet and invest in a decent RAPCO, PROCO or Whirlwind snake. You won't lose channels...
I have a 16x4 (XLR) 100' Proco available if anyone is interested....

Just a thought because I used to use a mixer and all... if all those inputs don't translate to individual, separate tracks in the DAW, it can be a headache. If you only need to play, fine. If you intend on recording, you want to be able to fine tune volume levels after, because if all you get is a stereo track out, you won't be able to turn up just the snare or whatever in the recording later if you wanted to.
