A Victor Bailey Question

Hey:

Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of bass Vic uses on the "Low Blow" album. Is it his sig Fender or something else (I heard he used to play a Pensa).

I don't think Victor was with Fender at the time of Low Blow so I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that was his Pensa Suhr since that's what he was playing a lot of back then. As a matter of fact, his signature Fender bass kind of resembles his Pensa.

A bit OT, but how about when he played with Weather Report?

I believe he used a P Bass with weather report, but I do not know what year it was. I have not even seen a picture of him with it.

For several years before Victor started playing with Weather Report his main bass (probably his only bass) was a red Fender Jazz Bass. And I'm pretty sure I saw a photo of him playing this same instrument in the Downbeat article that introduced the new WP members (Victor, Omar, & Jose) just before the release of the Procession album.

Sometime after the Procession album but before he started using Pensa-Suhr basses I saw him live using a red Schecter from the Tom Anderson era; not sure how much he recorded with that axe.

I was about to say that never heard anything Bailey played with Weather Report that sounded like a Precision. I am pretty sure Bailey was hired because he pretty good at getting a Jaco sort of sound on his Jazz.

P bass? Maybe he did but I remember him playing custom fretless basses (Charles Lobue IIRC)...





Still one of the most underrated cats out there. His time with WR was my introduction to them. His use of space set him apart from most fusion bassists IMO. And his tone was killin'. Weather Report was way more atmospheric AND funky during his tenure.

Yeah Pretty sure he played a P on Cucumber slumber. There was a video of him killing a fretted P and it's been taken down from youtube. I can't find much evidence now.

I have seen old pictures of Johnson on a P-bass too, but I think most, if not all of his fretless work was done on his Lobue bass. On his solo work and the Billy Cobham/George Duke Band, he used the Chapman Stick too.

Johnson certainly had a more earthy and funky groove than Jaco. Jaco could be funky, but he was almost always ultra busy, and that kept his groove from "breathing" like Johnson's playing.

Agreed. Playing with others is like having a conversation. I prefer a give and take vs. ones where one party is just waiting for a pause to get back to their yammering.

i think i remember reading an interview years ago where he talked about his favorite bass being a 57 precision. dont know if that modified one is the one hes talking about though.
