Chess notation can't be compared to music notation. There is no concept of tempo beyond the time control, and no emotional or interpretative dimensions that need to be captured or re-expressed. Provided each player makes the time control legally, the manner in which they get there is wholly irrelevant. And there is no need to capture the thinking process or how the pieces were moved - pushed, slammed, rolled? Who cares? There are a few words and codes for opening classification which, as in music, mean nothing to the untrained, a few symbols for evaluation of the position (+/=, -/+, etc) and moves (!, !?, ??, etc), but that's it. Nothing more is necessary.

The secret is groove. All great music has it. You might call it pulse. Basie, Ellington, the Rolling Stones are examples. But listen to Beethoven played by a great orchestra. That MF could groove, son. So can Mahler. Satie is another pulse meister. And as for Mozart -OH! And Bach would have vibed with Miles

Music is a language and styles are dialects. At the heart of all music is pulse. It is hard to notate. But a good player finds the pulse and rides it.

His assertion about G# major is funny, since in his "theory is easy" clip he claims there are 30 keys, which must include a G# key.
I’ve been struggling with that too. The notion that you play in every key is worthwhile. And yes there are 30 keys when it breaks down. And the way he points it out is somewhat genius - there is one key with no sharps or fats. Then each new key adds one till you get 7 sharps and seven flats. 7+7+1=15. Then you add the minors. Giving you another 15 keys. Hence 15+15=30. So you’re right. G# must exist.

There are 30 including enharmonics without going into double sharps/flats: B, F#, and C# major can be written as Cb, Gb, and Db major, and G#, D#, and A# minor can be written as Ab, Eb, or Bb minor. There are a couple caveats just due to trends though: B major and Db major are overwhelmingly the versions used because there's 5 accidentals in the key signature compared to the 7 of Cb and C# (although they do still pop up from time to time), and for minor keys, where the major 6 and 7 are also very commonly found, Ab, Eb, and Bb minor are much more common since raising the 6 and 7 of G#, D#, and A# minor leads to frequently seeing at least one double sharp. Double sharps and flats aren't hard to read, it's just that if the same ones are going to be repeated throughout a piece or if due to a modulation or tonicization the music becomes mostly double accidentals, the best practice is to just rewrite the whole piece or affected passages in a way that minimizes them while still being "correct" (i.e., if writing a piece in G# minor you wouldn't just change all occurences of F double sharps to G naturals, it's better to just rewrite the whole thing in Ab minor).

Thanks. That's a really good explanation, and I wasn't seeing it before. That makes total sense.
 
Speaking as a classical musician primarily, classical musicians not being able to groove is not related at all to the reliance on sheet music: groove is just not as high of a priority for most classical musicians (it should be much higher priority, especially for baroque and classical period music, but that’s another debate) and things like tone, intonation, and phrasing are generally the things people focus on most in the practice room. Also, if you aren’t familiar with swing music, can one actually swing regardless?



absolutely swings in this performance. I would expect Bach to swing
